Stephen Richard Day (born 30 October 1948) is a Conservative Party (UK), Conservative Party politician in the United Kingdom, and a former Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), Member of Parliament (MP). He was the Conservative candidate for Bradford West (UK Parliament constituency), Bradford West at the 1983 United Kingdom general election, 1983 general election, before being elected as MP for Cheadle (UK Parliament constituency), Cheadle from 1987 United Kingdom general election, 1987 to 2001 United Kingdom general election, 2001, when he lost his seat by 33 votes, the smallest margin of any constituency in the country. He stood again in the 2005 United Kingdom general election, 2005 general election and lost by over 4,000 votes, but the seat became vacant within a month on the death of MP Patsy Calton. Cheadle is a borough constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first-past-the-post voting system. It is a marginal seat between the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats. From 1970 until 2001, it was held by the Conservatives, after which it was held by the Liberal Democrats from 2001 until the 2015 general election, when it was taken back by the Conservatives. History Cheadle was created as a county constituency under the Representation of the People Act 1948, for the 1950 general election. it covered a predominantly urban and relatively affluent area in the south-eastern suburbs of the Manchester conurbation.
