''Stella Dallas'' is a 1925 American silent drama film that was produced by Samuel Goldwyn, adapted by Frances Marion, and directed by Henry King. The film stars Ronald Colman, Belle Bennett, Lois Moran, Alice Joyce, Jean Hersholt, and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. Prints of the film survive in several film archives. Winston Miller (June 22, 1910 – June 21, 1994) was an American screenwriter, film producer, and actor. He wrote for more than 60 films and television shows between 1936 and 1976. He began as an actor in silent films, appearing in eleven films between 1922 and 1929. He was the screenwriter for many TV series including ''Wagon Train'' Episode 13, Season 1 in 1957: "The Clara Beauchamp Story" with Nina Foch and Shepperd Strudwick. Earl Bellamy was the director. Maurice Murphy (October 3, 1913 – November 23, 1978) was an American film actor.Pitts, p.177. Initially a child actor, he graduated to playing older roles, often in action films. Vera Lewis (June 10, 1873 – February 8, 1956) was an American film and stage actress, beginning in the silent film era. She appeared in more than 180 films between 1915 and 1947. She was married to actor Ralph Lewis. Biography She was born in Manhattan, where she began acting in stage productions. Her film career started in 1915 with the film ''Hypocrites'', which starred Myrtle Stedman and Courtenay Foote. Charles Willis Lane (January 25, 1869–October 17, 1945) was an American stage and film actor, active from 1914 to 1929. Like many film performers born before 1900 Lane had extensive prior Broadway stage or regional theatrical experience stretching back to his youth in the 1890s. Lane was born in Madison, Illinois, and can be seen in silent films usually as a silver-haired other man or confidant. ''Stella'' is a 1990 American drama film produced by The Samuel Goldwyn Company and released by Touchstone Pictures. The screenplay by Robert Getchell is the third feature film adaptation of the 1923 novel '' Stella Dallas'' by Olive Higgins Prouty. Previous film versions were '' Stella Dallas'' (1937) and the silent film '' Stella Dallas'' (1925). The title character is a vulgar and unfashionable single mother living in Watertown, NY, who, determined to give her daughter Jenny all the opportunities she never had, ultimately makes a selfless sacrifice to ensure her happiness. This film version differs from earlier versions in that Stella never marries the father of her child, and in fact, declines his proposal early in the film.
