Arcturus (band)
Arcturus is a Norwegian avant-garde metal band formed in 1991. Their name, which means "Bear Guardian", references the Behenian fixed star Arcturus. History The band has released five official full-length albums. Arcturus has experimented throughout their career, extracting influences and incorporating elements from all over the musical spectrum including black metal and classical music, but the band was rooted as a metal outfit. Early days The original line-up was changed when bassist/vocalist Marius Vold (formerly of Thorns) was taken out of the band. The Kovenant
The Kovenant is a Norwegian industrial metal band from Hamar. The band originally formed as a symphonic black metal act known as Covenant in 1993, but in 1999 were forced to change their name to The Kovenant due to a dispute with a Swedish electronic band of the same name. The band's name change also marked a change in sound/style as well, as the band from there on began to focus more on an aggrotech/ industrial metal sound heavily influenced by Europe's EBM scene. Despite their style change, The Kovenant did however later reissue their early albums under The Kovenant name. History The "Covenant" years (1994–1999) The band was formed as Covenant in 1993 by two black metal artists known as Nagash and Blackheart. They both met when Blackheart decided to help Nagash with his one-man project Troll. They garnered little attention after releasing a demo titled ''From the Storm of Shadows'', but eventually a record label, Mordgrimm, took notice of them and released their first a ...

Sideshow Symphonies
''Sideshow Symphonies'' is the fourth studio album by the Norwegian avant-garde metal band Arcturus. It was released on 19 September 2005. It is the first to feature Simen "ICS Vortex" Hestnæs as the principal vocalist and Tore Moren as second guitarist, as well as the first Arcturus album released by Season of Mist. It marks yet another change in Arcturus' sound, with a cold, dreamy aesthetic featuring relatively quiet guitars, more prominent vocals, and a slightly reduced use of synthesizers. A problem during the mastering process caused some audio quality issues, most notably a substantial decrease in volume on "Shipwrecked Frontier Pioneer". The label was rumored to be working on fixing these issues for future pressings of the CD, but this seems to have never been addressed as the audio glitches are still present. "Hufsa" is the Norwegian name for The Groke, a fictional character of Tove Jansson's children's book series ''Moomin''. Track listing Artwork The album artw ...

The Sham Mirrors
''The Sham Mirrors'' is the third studio album by Norwegian avant-garde metal band Arcturus. It was released on April 9, 2002. ''The Sham Mirrors'' is a departure from the band's previous albums, featuring a much more modern, space-influenced sound, as opposed to the layered, classical melodies of 1997's '' La Masquerade Infernale''. The album contains elements of trip hop, ambient music and electronica in addition to the band's usual progressive black metal sound. Lyrically, the album deals with abstract science fiction-themed subjects, a stark contrast to the theatrical and Satanic lyrics of the band's earlier work. The album cover depicts a model drawing of the upper part of the Apollo spaceship. This is the last album to feature Kristoffer Rygg on vocals. Track listing Personnel ;Arcturus * Kristoffer Rygg (credited as "Trickster G. Rex") - vocals, producer, engineer * Knut M. Valle - electric guitar, engineer * Dag F. Aspera Hiems Symfonia/Constellation/My Angel
''Aspera Hiems Symfonia'' (Latin for ''"Harsh Winter Symphony"'') is the debut studio album by the Norwegian avant-garde metal band Arcturus. ''Aspera'' is the only album Arcturus released to showcase a melodic black metal sound, though it still contains many of the experimental elements that would be expanded upon on their following albums, which saw the band shift permanently into the genres of avant-garde and progressive metal. Four of the album's songs are re-recorded versions of tracks from the '' Constellation'' EP, whereas the other four are new songs. Background The music on ''Aspera'' is relatively down-tempo, atmospheric black metal, and is much more restrained in character and lyrical content than major black metal acts such as Mayhem and Darkthrone. The album's production is also thin and lo-fi in nature. The lyrical themes revolve around nature, winter, alchemy, astronomy, and Viking folklore and mythology. Re-release In 2002, the album was remastered, along ...

Disguised Masters
''Disguised Masters'' is a compilation album by the Norwegian avant-garde metal band Arcturus. The album has two new songs: "White Tie Black Noise" and "Deception Genesis". Other tracks are re-mixed versions of songs from '' La Masquerade Infernale'' and "Du Nordavind" from '' Aspera Hiems Symfonia''. Some songs received particularly significant overhauls, such as the gangsta rap version of "Master of Disguise". Due to the significant changes to several of the band's songs, it is not a typical compilation album, and is therefore more suited to existing fans of the band than new listeners. Track listing #"White Tie, Black Noise (Designed By When)" – 0:49 #"Deception Genesis" – 6:35 #"Du Nordavind (1998 Re-Recording)" – 3:54 #"Alone (Intellecto / Valle Darktrip)" – 5:20 #"The Throne of Tragedy (Phantom FX Jungle Remix)" – 6:49 #"La Masquerade Infernale (Valle/Hellhammer Reconstruction)" – 2:23 #"Master Of Disguise (Phantom FX Remix With 'Gangstafications' By S.C.N.)" ...

La Masquerade Infernale
''La Masquerade Infernale'' (Misspelled French for ''The Infernal Masquerade''. The correct spelling would be ''La Mascarade Infernale''.) is the second studio album by Arcturus. Released by Misanthropy Records in 1997, the album marks a drastic musical change from the slow, nature-influenced melodic black metal of ''Aspera Hiems Symfonia''. Most of the songs revolve around the themes of theater, literature, and Satan. The screams characteristic of black metal utilized by Kristoffer Rygg on ''Aspera'' are replaced by a gruff, low-toned, clean vocal style. The album also features operatic singing and bizarre high-pitched singing from guest vocalist Simen Hestnæs, who nine years later would replace Rygg as the band's frontman. It was reissued by Candlelight Records in 2003. In 2021, it was elected by ''Metal Hammer'' as the 12th best symphonic metal album of all time. Track listing * The album is actually 1:27 longer than listed due to the hidden track at the beginning of "M ...

Satyricon (band)
Satyricon is a Norwegian black metal band formed in Oslo in 1991. Satyr and Frost have been the band's core members since 1993. The band's first three albums typify the Norwegian black metal style. Since its fourth album in 1999, the band has strayed from this style and included elements of traditional heavy metal in their sound. Satyricon was the first Norwegian black metal band to join a multi-national record label (EMI). History The band were formed in 1990 as EczemaPowaviolenza: by the bassist Wargod and drummer Exhurtum. In 1991, they decided to start playing black metal and change the band name to Satyricon. Satyr (Sigurd Wongraven) then joined the band. After the first demo ''All Evil'', Exhurtum was kicked out of the band because he "preferred hanging out with my girl at the time rather than kicking down gravestones together with the band", while Wargod left the music scene and became a UN soldier afterwards. Remaining members Satyr and Lemarchand hired the drummer ...
