Stefan Szefer
Stefan Szefer ''(also known as Steve Shafer or Shaffer)'' (born May 8, 1942 in Poland) is a former Polish American soccer defender. He earned six caps during his career, three with Poland and three with the United States. Club career Most sources for Szefer’s early career are in Polish. In 1964, he was with Śląsk Wrocław. He then played for ŁKS Łódź from 1966 to 1968. In 1968, Szefer moved to the Chicago Mustangs of the North American Soccer League. The Mustangs folded at the end of the season. He then moved to Dutch club MVV Maastricht for two seasons, scoring two goals as a left back. In 1971, Szefer moved back to Chicago where he played for two amateur teams, Chicago Wisla (1971-1973) and the Ukrainian Lions (1973-1975). In 1975, he signed with the expansion Chicago Sting of the NASL. In May 1976, Szefer joined the Chicago Cats of the American Soccer League, but returned to the Sting for the 1977 season. In the sport of association football, a defender is an outfield position whose primary role is to stop attacks during the game and prevent the opposition from scoring. Centre-backs are usually positioned in pairs, with one full-back on either side to their left and right, but can be played in threes with or without full-backs. Chicago Sting (NASL) Players
The Chicago Sting (1974–1988) was an American professional soccer team representing Chicago. The Sting played in the North American Soccer League from 1975 to 1984 and in the Major Indoor Soccer League in the 1982–83 season and again from 1984 to 1988. They were North American Soccer League champions in 1981 and 1984, one of only two NASL teams (the New York Cosmos) to win the championship twice. The Sting were founded in 1974 by Lee Stern of Chicago and competed in the NASL for the first time in the 1975 season. A few years after founding the Sting, Stern brought Willy Roy on as head coach. Roy coached the Sting for the remainder of their outdoor existence. The team was named in reference to the popular 1973 film, ''The Sting'', whose action was set in Chicago of the 1930s.
