Staveley Town is a disused railway station in Staveley, Derbyshire in England. Similarly-named stations This station should not be confused with which was about 250 yards away on the same street, and which was also called Staveley Town from its opening in 1892 until it was renamed by British Railways in 1950. Nor should it be confused with , which in its early years was named Staveley. Barrow Hill was the next stop along the line towards from Staveley Town. Nor should it be confused with between and in Cumbria. Context The station was on the circuitous to Elmton & Creswell line via Clowne and Barlborough and the equally circuitous Barrow Hill to via line. Coalite
Coalite is a brand of low-temperature coke used as a smokeless fuel. The title refers to the residue left behind when coal is carbonised at . It was invented by Thomas Parker in 1904. In 1936 the Smoke Abatement Society awarded its inventor a posthumous gold medal. Coalite is darker and more friable than high temperature coke. Markham Colliery Disaster
Mining accidents at the Markham Colliery at Staveley near Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England. Accident in 1973 On 30 July 1973, 18 coal miners lost their lives and a further 11 were seriously injured when a descending cage carrying the men failed to slow down as it approached the bottom of the mine shaft and 18 miners were killed by the impact. The accident was caused by fracture of the brake-rod, when a slowly growing fatigue crack reached a critical size and the brake-rod parted.
