Statute Law Revision Programme
The Statute Law Revision Programme is a project of the Law Reform Commission responsible for the preparation of Statute law revision Bills in Ireland. The Programme, previously known as the Statute law revision project, operated in the office of the Attorney General from 2003 to 2012 and in the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform from 2012 to 2016. Its operation was taken over by the Law Reform Commission in 2020. The great majority of the legislation repealed have been acts passed by the Parliament of the United Kingdom and its predecessors. While introducing the most recent measure in 2016, Minister Damien English stated that "To date, over 60,000 items of legislation have been either expressly or implicitly repealed under the programme. Law Reform Commission (Ireland)
The Irish Law Reform Commission was established undeof th Activities The Commission an independent body which examines areas of the law and proposes reforms or changes. Most of their recommendations are adopted through legislation. According to its website, 70% of its proposals have resulted in the enactment of legislation effecting reforms. Statute Law Revision
Statute law revision may refer to the printing of, or the editorial process of preparing, a revised edition of the statutes, or to the process of repealing obsolete enactments to facilitate the preparation of such an edition, or to facilitate the consolidation of enactments. United Kingdom History Revision of the statutes was regarded by the Parliament of England as desirable as early as 1563 (see the preamble to the 5 Eliz 1 c 4). It was demanded by a petition of the Commons in 1610. Both Coke and Bacon were employed for some time on a commission for revision. Acts of Parliament, sometimes referred to as primary legislation, are texts of law passed by the Legislature, legislative body of a jurisdiction (often a parliament or council). Damien English
Damien English (born 21 February 1978) is an Irish Fine Gael politician who has been a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Meath West constituency since 2007, and previously from 2002 to 2007 for the Meath constituency. He served as Minister of State from 2014 to 2023. Early and personal life English was educated at Bohermeen National School in County Meath, and went on to attend Kells Community School. The Statute Law Revision (Pre-1922) Act 2005 (No. 32 of 2005) is an Act of the Oireachtas. Section 1 of the Act, with the Schedule, repeals statutes of Ireland, England, Great Britain and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The Act repealed around 200 statutes and is the first in a series of recent Statute Law Revision Acts enacted in Ireland as part of the Statute Law Revision Programme. Statute Law Revision Act 2007
The Statute Law Revision Act 2007 is an Act of the Oireachtas of the Republic of Ireland which repealed a large amount of pre-1922 legislation of Ireland, England, Great Britain and the United Kingdom while preserving a shorter list of statutes. The Act was the largest single Statute Law Revision Act or repealing measure ever enacted internationally. Background Prior to the 2007 Act, statute law revision had been sporadic since Irish independence in 1922. The Statute Law Revision (Pre-Union Irish Statutes) Act 1962 was one major such Act which repealed obsolete legislation of the Parliament of Ireland, which had provided that the Kings of England should be Kings of Ireland (from 1951 called in Northern Ireland the Crown of Ireland Act 1542), together with certain others from 1459 to 1800. The Statute Law Revision Act 2009 is a Statute Law Revision Act enacted by the Oireachtas in Ireland to review Local and Personal Acts passed prior to 1850 and Private Acts passed prior to 1750. The Act repealed a large number of pre-1922 Local and Personal, and Private Acts of Ireland, England, Great Britain and the United Kingdom while preserving a shorter list of statutes that were deemed suitable for retention. Scope The Statute Law Revision Act 2009 followed on from the Statute Law Revision Act 2007 which reviewed Public General Acts applying to Ireland that were enacted before the establishment of the Irish Free State in 1922. The 2009 Act involved a review of Local and Personal legislation pre-1850 and Private legislation pre-1750. It repealed 1,347 Acts of a Private or Local and Personal nature listed in schedule 2 to the Act. It retains 138 Local and Personal, or Private, Acts, which are listed in Schedule 1 to the Act.
