Stathelle
Stathelle is a town in Norway in the municipality of Bamble in the county of Telemark, Norway. History Stathelle was a former municipality in Telemark. It was separated from Bamble as a municipality of its own in 1851. In 1964, the municipalities of Stathelle and Langesund merged with Bamble municipality. With a population of about 8000, Stathelle is situated at the junction of the Langesundsfjord, Frierfjord and Eidangerfjord. Stathelle is an old trading town. In the middle of the 1800s, Stathelle was an enterprising seaport, characterized by the trading house established by Albert Blehr on Kjellestad, which was one of the nation's largest timber exporters. Today there is a marina and a park in the same area. Brevik bridge was constructed during 1962. Previously travelers along the southern highway between Oslo and Stavanger had to take the ferry between the towns of Brevik and Stathelle. Bamble
Bamble is a municipality in Vestfold og Telemark county, Norway. It is part of the traditional region of Grenland. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Langesund. General information Name The Old Norse form of the name was ''Bamblar'' (a plural form). The name could be related to the word ''bembel'' m 'belly' (used in the meaning 'round hill/mountain'). The name was written "Bamle" in the period 1889–1917. See also the name Bømlo. Coat-of-arms The coat-of-arms is from modern times. They were granted on 12 December 1986. The arms show a gold-colored ship's wheel on a blue background. The arms are nearly identical to the former arms of Stathelle, which along with Langesund was merged with the municipality of Bamble on 1 January 1964. Telemark
Telemark is a traditional region, a former county, and a current electoral district in southern Norway. In 2020, Telemark merged with the former county of Vestfold to form the county of Vestfold og Telemark. Telemark borders the traditional regions and former counties of Vestfold, Buskerud, Hordaland, Rogaland and Aust-Agder. Frierfjord
Frierfjorden is a fjord in the Grenland traditional district in the county of Telemark, Norway. It is an arm of the Langesundsfjord and well into the 1700s was also known as the Langesundsfjord. Frierfjorden stretches from the opening to Langesundsfjord in the south to the mouth of the Porsgrunn River in the north. The much smaller fjord of Gunneklevfjord opens into the Porsgrunn/Skien River and is separated from Frierfjorden by the peninsula of Herøya. Frierfjorden narrows to a width of about 300 m at its mouth, Breviksstrømmen, where the town of Brevik sits on the northern side and Stathelle on the southern side. The Brevik Bridge crosses Breviksstrømmen between the two towns. Turid Thomassen
Turid Thomassen (born 19 April 1965) is a Norwegian politician who was party leader of the Norwegian Red party from 2010 to 2012, succeeding Torstein Dahle. Born in Stathelle, Telemark, Thomassen works in the administration offices of the Department for Television Education and Film Science at the Lillehammer University College, where she is also the highest union representative for the Norwegian Civil Service Union. Ella Gjømle Berg (born May 29, 1979) is a cross-country skier from Stathelle, Bamble, Norway. She competes for Lyn Ski Club, Oslo. Career Gjømle Berg competed in the 2005 World Championship in Oberstdorf, finishing ninth in the sprint competition. She finished fourth in team sprint at the 2006 Olympics in Torino, and finished sixth in the individual sprint. Gjømle Berg finished second in the 2005/2006 Sprint World Cup. Knud Karl Krogh-Tonning
Knud Karl Krogh-Tonning (December 31, 1842 – February 19, 1911) was a Norwegian theologian, known for his conversion to Catholicism. Biography He was born at Stathelle, in the south of Norway, and graduated in 1861. He was manager of Læreskolen in Balestrand, and then in 1873 became Vicar of Årdal. After a number of other appointments he became pastor in Old Aker Church from 1886 to 1900. In autumn 1899 he applied to leave his position for reasons of conscience, and in 1900 he made public his conversion to Catholicism. His autobiographical ''En Konvertits Erindringer'' was published in 1906. He died at Kristiania, now Oslo, in 1911. This is a list of former municipalities of Norway, i.e. municipalities that no longer exist. When the local council system was introduced in Norway in 1837-38, the country had 392 municipalities. In 1958 the number had grown to a total of 744 rural municipalities, 64 city municipalities as well as a small number of small seaports with '' ladested'' status. A committee led by Nikolai Schei, formed in 1946 to examine the situation, proposed hundreds of mergers to reduce the number of municipalities and improve the quality of local administration. Most of the mergers were carried out, albeit to significant popular protest. As of January 2006 there are 431 municipalities in Norway, and there are plans for further mergers and political pressure to do so. In 2002 Erna Solberg, Minister of Local Government and Regional Development at the time, expressed a wish to reduce the current tally with 100. Breviksfjord
The Langesundsfjord (), also known as the Breviksfjord (), is a stretch of fjord from northern Skagerrak, between the islands of Sandøya, Bjørkøya and Siktesøya in Porsgrunn municipality and the mainland of Bamble municipality, in Telemark county in the southeastern part of Norway. Location The fjord stretches from the strait Langesund until Brevik, where it separates into the Frierfjord and the Eidangerfjord. In the mediaeval period the fjord was named ''Grenmar'', after the ''grener'' people who lived here and ''mar'' which was Old Norse for sea. Later, well into the 1700s, the entire stretch from Langesund gap and up to Skien was referred to as Langesundsfjord. Langesundsfjorden is especially noted for the discovery of fluorescent minerals. Eidangerfjord
Eidangerfjord is a fjord located in Porsgrunn municipality in Telemark county, Norway. It is 6 km long, and stretches between Brevik and the island village of Sandøya. The largest island located in the fjord is Kattøya, located at the head of Eidangerfjord. The shipping harbor for the cement produced by Norcem is located at Brevik. Old Norse
Old Norse, Old Nordic, or Old Scandinavian, is a stage of development of North Germanic languages, North Germanic dialects before their final divergence into separate Nordic languages.
