States Rights Records
States Rights Records is an independent record label founded in 2001 by Steve Schroeder. The Portland, Oregon label's premier release was "Come Along" by Little Wings. Later that year, the label released "Tongue and Tooth" by The Badger King. Bobby Birdman, Yacht, Lucky Dragons, The Blow, The Dirty Projectors, White Rainbow and others have released on States Rights Records. Each band chooses a "state" for which their release will represent within the States Rights Records catalogue. As a result, there is no catalogue number for the releases, simply states. Atlantis, Socal, and "Far West Texas" have also been represented. The Business (record Store)
The Business is an independent record store, music distribution company and concert venue located on Commercial Avenue in Anacortes, Skagit County, Washington, United States. It formerly also housed a book store, a photography studio, a café-bistro, a recording studio and a record label. From 1978 to 2008, The Business was located at 1717 Commercial Avenue; from 2008 to 2016 at 402 Commercial Avenue; and since 2016 it has been located at 216 Commercial Avenue. The store currently stocks new and used music releases on vinyl records, compact discs and audio cassettes, as well as music-oriented posters and original artworks. It also frequently holds free, all-ages shows during store hours with locally and nationally known artists from a wide variety of genres. Cains & Abels
Cains & Abels is an American musical group originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan, and currently based in Chicago, Illinois. The band consists of David Sampson (vocals, bass guitar), Joshua Ippel (guitar), Jonathan Dawe (drums, vocals) and Michelle Vondiziano (Keyboard instrument, keyboards, vocals). The band members met in 2003 while attending Calvin College. In May 2009, Cains & Abels released ''Call Me Up'' on States Rights Records. In a ''Pitchfork Media'' list, the post-Afrobeat dance explosion band NOMO named it one of the best albums of 2008, though the album did not officially come out until 2009. Xiu Xiu
Xiu Xiu ( ) is an American experimental band, formed in 2002 by singer-songwriter Jamie Stewart in San Jose, California. Currently, the line-up consists of Stewart (the only constant member since formation) and Angela Seo. The band's name comes from the film '' Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl'', which has influenced the sound of their music, according to Stewart. Xiu Xiu released their first two albums, ''Knife Play'' (2002) and ''A Promise'' (2003) on 5 Rue Christine to positive critical reception. In-between the two, the EP ''Chapel of the Chimes'' was released via Absolutely Kosher. Thanksgiving and Adrian Orange & Her Band are the names under which Portland, Oregon singer/songwriter Adrian Orange (born March 20, 1986) performs. First adopting the "Thanksgiving" moniker around 1999–2000, Orange played experimental folk music, often accompanying himself on guitar and self-recording his albums using analog equipment. Dear Nora (band)
Dear Nora is an indie pop band formed in Portland, Oregon in 1999 by songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist Katy Davidson, drummer and vocalist Marianna Ritchey, and bassist Ryan Wise. Ritchey and Wise were previously members of Wolf Colonel. They named their new band after Lewis & Clark College music professor Nora Beck. Dear Nora's first album, ''We'll Have a Time'', was produced by Amy Linton of The Aislers Set and released on the Portland label Magic Marker Records in 2001. After moving to San Francisco, Davidson continued to record under the name Dear Nora with a rotating cast of band members. The band released two more main albums, ''Mountain Rock'' (2004) and ''There Is No Home'' (2006), as well as several 7" singles and EPs.
