State Route 61 (Georgia)
State Route 61 (SR 61) is a state highway that travels south-to-north through portions of Carroll, Douglas, Paulding, Bartow, Gordon, and Murray counties in the western and northwestern parts of the U.S. state of Georgia. The highway connects the Carrollton area with the Tennessee state line, via Villa Rica, Dallas, Cartersville, and Chatsworth. The portion of the highway from just northeast of Carrollton to Villa Rica was formerly the path of US 78S. When that highway was decommissioned, it was redesignated as US 78 Alternate. Route description SR 61 begins at an intersection with SR 166, northeast of Carrollton in Carroll County. It heads north-northeast to the town of Villa Rica. Carrollton, Georgia
Carrollton, Georgia is a city in the northwest region of Georgia, about 45 miles (72 km) west of Atlanta near the Alabama state line. It is the county seat of Carroll County, which is included in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area. Historically, Carrollton has been a commercial center for several mostly rural counties in both Georgia and Alabama. It is the home of the University of West Georgia and West Georgia Technical College. It is a rural area with a large farming community. The 2019 United States Census estimates placed the city's population at 27,259. History Carroll County, of which Carrollton is the county seat, was chartered in 1826, and was governed at the time by the Carroll Inferior Court, which consisted of five elected justices. A decommissioned highway is a highway that has been removed from service by being shut down, or has had its authorization as a national, provincial or state highway removed, the latter also referred to as downloading. Decommissioning can include the complete or partial demolition or abandonment of an old highway structure because the old roadway has lost its utility, but such is not always the norm. Where the old highway has continuing value, it likely remains as a local road offering access to properties denied access to the new road or for use by slow vehicles such as farm equipment and horse-drawn vehicles denied use of the newer highway. State Route 120 (SR 120) is a state highway that runs west-to-east through portions of Haralson, Paulding, Cobb, Fulton, and Gwinnett counties in northwestern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. State Route 8 (SR 8) is a state highway that travels west-to-east through portions of Haralson, Carroll, Douglas, Cobb, Fulton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Barrow, Clarke, Oconee, Madison, Franklin, and Hart counties, bisecting the northern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. A concurrency in a road network is an instance of one physical roadway bearing two or more different route numbers. When two roadways share the same right-of-way, it is sometimes called a common section or commons. Other terminology for a concurrency includes overlap, coincidence, duplex (two concurrent routes), triplex (three concurrent routes), multiplex (any number of concurrent routes), dual routing or triple routing.
