State Route 48 (Tennessee)
State Route 48 (SR 48) is a long north–south state highway in Middle Tennessee. It traverses six counties, and it is long. Route description Wayne, Perry, and Lewis Counties SR 48 begins as a primary state route in far northern Wayne County at a junction with SR 13. Then it travels through the southeastern corner of Perry County before entering Lewis County to intersect SR 20, and then U.S. Route 412 (US 412) and SR 99 in Hohenwald. After Hohenwald, SR 48 then goes due north to Hickman County. Hickman County SR 48 then runs concurrently with SR 100 near the Beaver Dam Creek Wildlife Management Area. It follows SR 100 to Centerville, where it intersects SR 50 and bridges the Duck River. SR 48 becomes a secondary route after separating from SR 100 and intersects SR 230 at Nunnelly. A concurrency in a road network is an instance of one physical roadway bearing two or more different route numbers. When two roadways share the same right-of-way, it is sometimes called a common section or commons. Other terminology for a concurrency includes overlap, coincidence, duplex (two concurrent routes), triplex (three concurrent routes), multiplex (any number of concurrent routes), dual routing or triple routing. Cumberland Furnace is an unincorporated community in Dickson County, Tennessee, United States. Cumberland Furnace is served by a U.S. Post Office, ZIP Code 37051. History General James Robertson purchased the land now known as Cumberland Furnace in 1793 and constructed the first furnace. In 1804, Montgomery Bell moved to Middle Tennessee and purchased James Robertson's iron works business for $16,000. Bell expanded his operations and constructed other furnaces and mills, including a hammer mill south of Charlotte on Jones Creek utilizing waterpower. By 1808, Bell was buying wood at 50 cents per cord for charcoal to fuel his furnaces which cast cannonballs utilized in the War of 1812 by General Andrew Jackson's troops at the Battle of New Orleans. State Route 230 (SR 230) is a secondary state highway located in Humphreys County and Hickman County in Middle Tennessee. It consists largely of former county highways that were designated as a state route in order to ensure adequate ongoing maintenance funding.
