State Route 32 (Virginia 1933-1940)
The following is a list of former primary state highways completely or mostly within the Hampton Roads District (VDOT District 5), formerly the Suffolk District, of the U.S. state of Virginia. SR 88 State Route 88 was a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. The number was assigned in the 1940 renumbering to replace part of State Route 32, and SR 88 was transferred to the secondary system in 1943 and 1948. SR 88 ran from Branchville via Emporia to Purdy along current State Route 730 and part of State Route 619; SR 32 had continued east from Branchville to Boykins along State Route 195 and east from Purdy past Jarratt along State Route 608, State Route 139, and State Route 631. Smithfield, VA
Smithfield is a town in Isle of Wight County, in the South Hampton Roads subregion of the Hampton Roads region of Virginia in the United States. The population was 8,089 at the 2010 census. The town is most famous for the curing and production of the Smithfield ham. The Virginia General Assembly passed a statute defining "Smithfield ham" by law in 1926, with one of the requirements that it be processed within the town limits. Franklin is the southwesternmost independent city in Hampton Roads, Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 8,180. 1933 Renumbering (Virginia)
In 1933, the U.S. state of Virginia renumbered almost all of its state highways. This renumbering was caused by the assignment of numbers from 600 up to the new secondary system, but all three-digit numbers were affected. At the same time, all numbers that conflicted with U.S. Routes - except State Route 13 - were renumbered, and all long overlaps with U.S. Routes were eliminated. Several new routes had the same numbers as U.S. Routes and served as their extensions. List of routes Prior to 1933, routes were assigned by district. Two-digit routes generally crossed district lines, while three-digit routes were assigned with their first digit as the district number. 1940 Census
The United States census of 1940, conducted by the Census Bureau, determined the resident population of the United States to be 132,164,569, an increase of 7.3 percent over the 1930 population of 122,775,046 people. The census date of record was April 1, 1940. A number of new questions were asked including where people were five years before, highest educational grade achieved, and information about wages. This census introduced sampling techniques; one in 20 people were asked additional questions on the census form. Other innovations included a field test of the census in 1939.
