At the 2020 census, its population was 1,425, down from 1,516 at the 2010 census. History Hackleburg developed in the early 19th century as a stop along Jackson's Military Road. It was named by the early drovers of sheep who passed through the region while ''en route'' to market in Tuscumbia, and whose sheep encountered a thorny plant growing in abundance in that area and known locally by the name hack burrs (often corrupted to "hack berries") and which same plants were often fatal to sheep, besides being destructive to their wool. A post office opened in the town in 1885. Hackleburg incorporated in 1909 following the construction of a branch line of the Illinois Central Railroad through the area. Marion County is a county of the U.S. state of Alabama. As of the 2020 census the population was 29,341. The county seat is Hamilton. The county was created by an act of the Alabama Territorial General Assembly on February 13, 1818. The county seat was originally established in Pikeville in 1820, and moved to Hamilton in 1881. State Route 172 (SR 172) is a state highway that serves as an east-west connection between Vina and Bear Creek through Franklin and Marion Counties. SR 172 intersects SR 19 at its western terminus and SR 13 at its eastern terminus. Route description SR 172 begins at its intersection with SR 19 in Vina. From this point, SR 172 travels in a southeasterly direction where it meets SR 187 in Hodges. From Hodges, the route continues generally in its eastern direction and intersects US 43/ SR 17 in Hackleburg. From this point, SR 172 again continues generally in an easterly direction and intersects SR 237, in addition to sharing a concurrency with SR 241, prior to reaching its eastern terminus at SR 13 in Bear Creek. State Route 13 (SR 13) is a state highway in the western part of the U.S. state of Alabama. Except for a portion roughly between Berry and Russellville, SR 13 is the unsigned designation for U.S. Route 43 (US 43). Thus, while the total distance of the route is over , as an independently signed route, SR 13 is only long. The southern terminus of US 43 and SR 13 is at their intersection with US 90 and unsigned SR 16 in Mobile. The northern terminus of the route is on US 43 at the Tennessee state line north of Killen in Lauderdale County.
