State Road 66 (Florida)
State Road 66 (SR 66) is a 25-mile-long east–west state highway in Hardee County and Highlands County. Its western terminus is an intersection with US 17 ( SR 35) in Zolfo Springs; the eastern terminus is an intersection with US 27- 98 ( SR 25-700) near DeSoto City. The eastern continuation of SR 66 is eastbound US 98-SR 700 toward Okeechobee and West Palm Beach. State Road 66 snakes through farmlands, woodlands, and wetlands in a sparsely populated region of southern Florida. Near Crewsville, SR 66 provides access (''via'' South Hammock Road, Washington Road, and Hammock Road) to Highlands Hammock State Park. Zolfo Springs, Florida
Zolfo Springs is a town in Hardee County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census, up from 1,641 at the 2000 census. History Early prosperity in the area (known initially as simply Zolfo) was due to its location along the Florida Cracker Trail, a cattle trail from Bradenton to Fort Pierce. Cattle herded from this area and the Florida Heartland was run to the coasts along this route as early as 1850. The Florida Cracker Trail today includes parts of State Road 64 and State Road 66 through Zolfo Springs. In 1886, transportation improved through Zolfo when the Florida Southern Railway (later the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad) was built through the town on its way from Bartow to Punta Gorda. The railroad built a depot in the town and a post office was established the same year. The railroad was removed in the early 1980s. The State Highway System of the U.S. state of Florida comprises the roads maintained by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) or a toll authority. The components are referred to officially as state roads, abbreviated as SR. History Prior to the 1945 renumbering, State Roads were given numbers in the order they were added to the system. The 1945 renumbering removed many roads that were never built and added some that had not existed prior to 1945. State Road 700 (SR 700) is the mostly unsigned Florida Department of Transportation state road designation of U.S. Route 98 (US 98) between Chassahowitzka (where US 98 continues northward as unsigned SR 55) and Twentymile Bend (where US 98 continues eastward as signed SR 80). The only segments of State Road 700 that are signed are between SR 50A and US 41 in Brooksville, and from Okeechobee south, through Canal Point, to SR 80. From the northernmost signed point, it's an unsigned concurrency with SR 45(US 41), then with SR 50, before rejoining US 98 at the west end of the US 98/SR 50 concurrency. The section between Canal Point to SR 80 is signed only as State Road 700 since the relocating of US 98 to run concurrent with US 441 in Palm Beach County. Highlands Hammock State Park
Highlands Hammock State Park is a park west of Sebring in Highlands County, Florida, off U.S. 27. The park opened in 1931, four years before the Florida state park system was created. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2018.
