The State Office for the Protection of the Constitution (german: Landesbehörde für Verfassungsschutz; ) is a state-level security agency in Germany. In seven federal states of Germany, it is a semi-independent agency called and reports to the state's interior ministry. In the nine remaining federal states, it is organized as a division within the state's interior ministry. They are the domestic cousins of foreign intelligence agencies, and typically conduct counterintelligence to thwart other countries' foreign intelligence efforts. The old states of Germany (german: die alten Länder) is a jargon referring to the ten of the sixteen states of the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) that were part of West Germany and that unified with the eastern German Democratic Republic's 5 states, which are given the contrasting term New states of Germany. Usage of this terminology usually excludes one other state, Berlin, conterminous with the capital city of the reunified nation which used to be divided, with its western part linked with West Germany. The (State Office for the Protection of the Constitution Saxony) is the domestic intelligence agency of the Germany, German federal state of Saxony. Its main function is the observation and surveillance of anti-constitutional activities in the States of Germany, German state of Saxony. The office is subordinate to the Saxon Ministry of State for the Interior. It cooperates with the federal agency, the Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz, and the 15 other Federal states of Germany, state agencies. With currently 187 employees, the office is based in Dresden.
