Starý Smokovec
Starý Smokovec (; german: Altschmecks; hu, Ótátrafüred; pl, Stary Smokowiec) is a part of the town of Vysoké Tatry (town), Vysoké Tatry in northern Slovakia in the Tatras. Its name is pronounced approximately "Star-EE Smoke-oh-vets", meaning "Old Smokovec". Starý Smokovec is a popular resort for skiing and hiking. It also forms the junction of the Tatra Electric Railway train line, connecting Poprad, Tatranská Lomnica and Štrbské Pleso. Amongst the more important buildings in the district are the sanatorium and the Grand Hotel (established in 1904). It is connected by the Starý Smokovec–Hrebienok funicular to the small ski resort of Hrebienok at 1285 m. Vysoké Tatry (town)
Vysoké Tatry (; hu, Magastátra, ; german: Höhe Tatra, ; pl, Wysokie Tatry, ; cs, Vysoké Tatry, ), formally Mesto Vysoké Tatry () is a town at the feet of the Slovak part of High Tatras in Slovakia including all the major resorts in that region. It was created in 1990, and its official name from 1990 to 1999 was '' Starý Smokovec'', which is the name of one of its major settlements. Features and statistics The town of Vysoké Tatry is special in many aspects. The Tatra Mountains (), Tatras, or Tatra (''Tatry'' either in Slovak () or in Polish () - ''plurale tantum''), are a series of mountains within the Western Carpathians that form a natural border between Slovakia and Poland. Tatra Electric Railway
The Tatra Electric Railway ( sk, Tatranská elektrická železnica), colloquially Tatra Railway, is an electrified (1500 V DC) single track narrow gauge railway in the Slovak part of the Tatra mountains. Poprad
Poprad (; hu, Poprád; german: Deutschendorf) is a city in northern Slovakia at the foot of the High Tatra Mountains, famous for its picturesque historic centre and as a holiday resort. It is the biggest town of the Spiš region and the tenth largest city in Slovakia, with a population of approximately 50,000. Štrbské Pleso
Štrbské pleso (, german: Tschirmer See, pl, Szczyrbskie jezioro, hu, Csorbató or ) is a picturesque mountain lake of glacial origin and a top tourist destination in the High Tatras, Slovakia. It is the second-largest glacial lake on the Slovak side of the High Tatras, after Veľké Hincovo pleso. Maximum depth is 20 metres (66 ft). Description Štrbské pleso is now part of the neighborhood of Štrbské Pleso (spelled with a capital ''P''). Starý Smokovec–Hrebienok Funicular
The Starý Smokovec–Hrebienok funicular ( sk, Pozemná lanová dráha Starý Smokovec – Hrebienok) is a funicular between Starý Smokovec and the tourist complex at the summit of Hrebienok in the High Tatras, Slovakia. History The first rolling stock for the funicular was ordered from the legendary Ganz Works by Matejka és Kriger (Matejka Vince and Kriger Vilmos), a company based in Poprad (then part of Hungary, within Austria-Hungary). After several years of preparations, the first tourist passengers travelled by funicular on 20 December 1908. The funicular operated on the original track until 1967. Great reconstruction of the line took place in 1967. New technology for the entire line was provided by the Italian Ceretti-Tanfani company. The passenger capacity of the new funicular cars increased from 45 to 130 passengers. Slavkovský štít
Slavkovský štít is the fourth highest mountain peak that can be reached on a marked trail in the High Tatra mountains in Slovakia Slovakia (; sk, Slovensko ), officially the Slovak Republic ( sk, Slovenská republika, links=no ), is a landlocked country in Central Europe. A ski is a narrow strip of semi-rigid material worn underfoot to glide over snow.
