Stars was a landmark restaurant in San Francisco, California, from 1984 through 1999. Along with Spago, Michael's and Chez Panisse, it is considered one of the birthplaces of California cuisine, New American cuisine and the institution of the celebrity chef. History Jeremiah Tower, former chef of Chez Panisse, opened Stars at 150 Redwood Alley near San Francisco's City Hall in 1984, together with investors from Berkeley's Fourth Street Grill and Santa Fe Bar and Grill. With an opulent interior, a busy open kitchen and an unabashed preference for socialites and celebrities, Stars and its pioneering approach to food and dining became an instant sensation. The restaurant was among the top-grossing eateries in the United States for years. Tower opened branches of Stars in Oakville (Napa Valley), Palo Alto, Manila and Singapore. Jerry Traunfeld
Jerry Traunfeld is an American chef and author who served as the executive chef of The Herbfarm restaurant in Woodinville, Washington from July 1990 to November 2007. Prior to that he was the executive chef of the Alexis Hotel in Seattle and a pastry chef at Jeremiah Tower's Stars in San Francisco. Traunfeld was the 2000 winner of the James Beard Award for "Best American Chef: Northwest and Hawaii." Emily Underhill Luchetti ( née Emily White Underhill; born 1957) is an American pastry chef, cookbook author, and educator. She is a 2004 James Beard award-winner for Outstanding Pastry Chef. Steve Ells (born September 12, 1966) is an American businessman. He is the founder, former CEO, and former Executive Chairman of Chipotle Mexican Grill. Ells founded Chipotle in 1992, and under his direction, the chain serves what it describes as "naturally raised meat" and promotes sustainable agriculture. On November 29, 2017, Chipotle announced Ells' resignation as CEO, pending the search for a new CEO with "turnaround expertise". Brendan Walsh (born 1959) is an American chef known for southwestern cuisine. He was the original chef of Arizona 206 in New York City (from 1985 to 1988) and won the "Who's Who of Cooking in America" James Beard Foundation Award. Atelier Crenn is a French restaurant in the Cow Hollow neighborhood in San Francisco, California. Dominique Crenn (born 1965) is a French chef. she is the only woman chef in the United States to attain three Michelin stars, for her restaurant Atelier Crenn, in San Francisco, California.
