Starcade
''Starcade'' is an American game show where contestants competed against one another by playing arcade video games. The series originally aired on WTBS from 1982 to 1983, followed by a run in syndication for the following season. The series was first hosted by Mark Richards. Geoff Edwards replaced Richards after the first 23 shows, and continued until the show's cancellation. Broadcast history ''Starcade'' was produced by the JM Production Company to air on WTBS and later syndication by Turner Program Services (TPS). ''Starcade'' was the first video arcade game show, and set the blueprint for similar game shows like ''Video Power'', ''Nick Arcade'', and ''Arena''. The show was used to sponsor and showcase brand new coin-operated machines of the golden age of arcade video games. Geoff Edwards
Geoffrey Bruce Owen Edwards (February 13, 1931 – March 5, 2014) was an American television actor, game show host, and radio personality. Starting in the early 2000s, he was also a writer and broadcaster on the subject of travel. Background Prior to his media career, Edwards was an accomplished musician, playing drums in a number of jazz bands. Edwards began his career while attending Duke University, working for a radio station in Albany, New York. In 1959, Edwards got his first job at KFMB-AM in San Diego, hosting an evening show and co-hosting the ''Don Ross/Geoff Edwards Show''. As a news reporter for KHJ-AM radio, Edwards was present in the basement of Dallas police headquarters when Jack Ruby shot suspected John F. Kennedy assassin Lee Harvey Oswald on November 24, 1963. Alex Trebek
George Alexander Trebek (; July 22, 1940 – November 8, 2020) was a Canadian-American game show host and television personality. He is best known for hosting the syndicated general knowledge quiz game show ''Jeopardy!'' for 37 seasons from its revival in 1984 until his death in 2020. Trebek also hosted a number of other game shows, including ''The Wizard of Odds'', '' Double Dare'', ''High Rollers'', '' Battlestars'', ''Classic Concentration'', and '' To Tell the Truth''. He also made appearances, usually as himself, in numerous films and television series. A native of Canada, Trebek became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1998. The golden age of arcade video games was the period of rapid growth, technological development and cultural influence of arcade video games, from the late 1970s to the early 1980s. The period began with the release of ''Space Invaders'' in 1978, which led to a wave of shoot 'em up games such as ''Galaxian'' and the vector monitor, vector graphics-based ''Asteroids (video game), Asteroids'' in 1979, made possible by new computing technology that had greater power and lower costs. KPIX-TV (channel 5) is a television station licensed to San Francisco, California, United States, serving as the San Francisco Bay Area's CBS network outlet. It is owned and operated by the network's CBS News and Stations division alongside CW affiliate KBCW (channel 44), also licensed to San Francisco. It was created by JM Production, and debuted shortly after the cancellation of their earlier game show ''Starcade''. ''The Video Game'' was taped at Six Flags Magic Mountain amusement park. Greg Winfield hosted, Karen Lea modeled, and Christopher Kriesa announced. Gameplay To begin, two contestants were called down from the audience. They each played the same video game, and the first to reach a pre-determined score (or outcome) won a prize and came up to play a special mini-game. ''Sinistar'' is a 1983 multidirectional shooter arcade game developed and manufactured by Williams Electronics. It was created by Sam Dicker, Jack Haeger, Noah Falstein, RJ Mical, Python Anghelo, and Richard Witt. Players control a spacecraft pilot who battles the eponymous Sinistar. In addition to the game's use of digitized speech for its antagonist, ''Sinistar'' is known for its high difficulty level. Gameplay The player pilots a lone spacecraft, mining drifting planetoids and catching the crystals which are released. Shooting a planetoid too rapidly destroys it without releasing any crystals. Turner Program Services
Turner Program Services was the former syndication arm of Turner Broadcasting. It served the same purpose as Turner Entertainment's distribution unit, with the exception that TPS was more involved in distributing television series rather than films. Founded in 1982, the company was originally responsible for syndicating Turner-produced programs (such as the syndicated game show ''Starcade'') as well as developing programming for TBS such as ''Night Tracks''. TPS expanded its distribution into other networks' series in the 1990s, syndicating series such as ''The Wonder Years'' (which is now owned by 20th Television since 2011). ''Centipede'' is a 1981 fixed shooter arcade game developed and published by Atari, Inc. Designed by Dona Bailey and Ed Logg, it was one of the most commercially successful games from the golden age of arcade video games and one of the first with a significant female player base. Battlestars (game Show)
''Battlestars'' is an American game show that aired on NBC during the 1980s. The program's concept was developed and produced by Merrill Heatter, featuring a six-celebrity panel. The object of the game is to "capture" the celebrities by lighting up numbers positioned around triangle shapes, inside of which sat each panelist. Similar to ''Hollywood Squares'', which Heatter also co-created and produced, the celebrities are asked questions by the host, and the contestants judge the truth of their answers in order to light up the numbers. The show premiered on October 26, 1981, with Alex Trebek hosting and Rod Roddy serving as the announcer. This marked Heatter's first solo production since his former production partner, Bob Quigley, retired and their company was dissolved. The program ran until April 23, 1982.
