Miniature Model (gaming)
In miniature wargaming, players enact simulated battles using scale models called miniature models, which can be anywhere from 2 to 54 mm in height, to represent warriors, vehicles, artillery, buildings, and terrain. These models are colloquially referred to as miniatures or minis. Miniature models are commonly made of metal, plastic, or paper. They are used to augment the visual aspects of a game and track position, facing, and line of sight of characters. Miniatures are typically painted and can be artfully sculpted, making them collectible in their own right. Pre-painted plastic figures, such as ''Clix'' miniatures produced by WizKids and unpainted plastic figures for ''Warhammer'' by Games Workshop, have become popular. ''Call of Cthulhu'' is a horror fiction role-playing game based on H. P. Lovecraft's story of the same name and the associated Cthulhu Mythos. The game, often abbreviated as ''CoC'', is published by Chaosium; it was first released in 1981 and is in its seventh edition, with licensed foreign language editions available as well. Its game system is based on Chaosium's Basic Role-Playing (BRP) with additions for the horror genre. These include special rules for sanity and luck. Gameplay Setting ''Call of Cthulhu'' is set in a darker version of our world based on H. P. Lovecraft's observation (from his essay, "Supernatural Horror in Literature") that "The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown." Dark Horse Miniatures
Dark Horse Miniatures was an American company that produced 25 mm metal miniatures for fantasy role-playing games in the 1980s. History Dark Horse Miniatures was formed in 1979 to produce metal miniatures for the increasingly popular fantasy RPG market, including orcs, adventurers, elves, warriors, and monsters. The company started its own newsletter, ''Dark Times'', for its mail order customers. Critic Bob Kindel noted that the newsletter "parodies, satirizes, and otherwise mocks more conventional house organs. It's a punster’s delight." In 1981, the company moved to Idaho. Unlike other miniatures companies of the time, Dark Horse provided alternate weapons, accessories and even pets for their miniatures, cast on the same "tree" in order to save costs. Crimson Dragon Miniatures
''Crimson Dragon Miniatures'' is a generic line of miniatures published by TAG Industries of Castalia, Ohio. Contents ''Crimson Dragon Miniatures'' included 25mm scale figures that can be used in fantasy role-playing games such as ''Dungeons & Dragons'' or ''RuneQuest''. TAG Industries went out of business in the 1980s, and its assets, including the Crimson Dragon Miniatures line, were purchased by Ravens Forge Miniatures in 1996. Reception In the January 1984 edition of '' Dragon'' (Issue 81), Kim Eastland reviewed the first offerings in the Crimson Dragon Miniatures line, and commented, "this initial line is... impressive." He liked the sculpts, noting the "good detail and some nice touches (like the fighter mage's armor and magical sword.)."
