Star Awards 1998 is the 5th edition of the annual Star Awards presented by the Television Corporation of Singapore to honour its artistes who work on Channel 8. The Best Comedy Performer and Best Variety Show Host Awards were introduced to recognise excellence in non-drama categories such as sitcoms, comedy shows and variety/ infotainment shows. Star Awards 1999
The Star Awards (Chinese: 红星大奖) are awards for artistic and technical merit in the media organisation Mediacorp of Singapore where Mediacorp recognises entertainers under their employment for outstanding performances of the year. The awards are given annually in a ceremony. The various category winners are awarded a trophy, with initial designs featuring various star shapes. The star was subsequently removed and the trophy is designed as a S shaped column, depicting the star. History The 1st Star Awards presentation was held on 26 February 1994, took place at the Caldecott Broadcast Centre, MediaCorp TV Theatre with an audience of about 500 people. There have no other pre-show and post-awards ceremony held in that year. Winners were announced during the presentation of the ceremony, the ceremony also presented a popularity contest, with Li Nanxing, Chew Chor Meng and Zoe Tay winning the Most Popular Actor and Actress award, respectively. Lina Ng
Lina Ng Su Fang (; born 6 May 1974) is a Singaporean actress and host. She was a full-time Mediacorp and SPH MediaWorks artiste from 1993 to 2004 but currently continues to film on an ad-hoc basis. One of the most acclaimed actresses in Singapore, Ng is the first and only actress to win an Asian Academy Creative Award and aAsian Television Awardin Singapore. In 2021, Ng received the Asian Television Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as a ''majie'' in the English-language series '' Last Madame''.She also runs Mustard Seeds Academy, which provides Chinese enrichment classes to childcare centres. Career Ng entered the entertainment industry after finishing 1st runner-up in the local talent-search competition Star Search 1993. Huang Wenyong
Huang Wenyong (25 July 1952 – 20 April 2013) was a Malaysia-born Singaporean actor and former teacher of Chinese descent. Local media and colleagues referred to him as "Ah Ge" (senior actor) due to his status. Huang died at the Singapore General Hospital at around 5 pm (GMT+8) on 20 April 2013, at the age of 60 due to lymphoma. Early life and career Huang was a teacher in Kuala Lumpur before leaving for Singapore. Huang moved to Singapore in the 1970s, with only fifty dollars in hand. He joined the Singapore Broadcasting Corporation in 1981. He is perhaps best known for his appearances in '' The Awakening'', in which he played love interest to Xiang Yun's character, and '' The Seletar Robbery'' in 1982. Jack Neo
Jack Neo (born 24 January 1960) is a Singaporean actor, television host, comedian and film director. He was prominently a full-time Mediacorp artiste from 1983 to 2003. In the 1990s and early 2000s, he was best known for his cross-dressing roles, as Liang Po Po (literally: Granny Liang) and Liang Xi Mei (a woman homemaker in her 40s) in the long-running television comedy show ''Comedy Nite''. Since his debut as a feature director, Neo has proven to be the most commercially successful local director who has also met with some success in Malaysia and Taiwan. He has shown a penchant for the franchise series films. His most critically acclaimed film is ''I Not Stupid'', which satirizes Singapore's streaming educational system in 2002. Mark Lee (Singaporean Actor)
Mark Lee Kok Huang (; born 16 October 1968) is a Singaporean comedian, actor, television host and film director. Early life Lee's father was a barber, and his mother was a food and beverage stall assistant. Growing up, Lee would help out in the hawker stall to prepare and sell cooked food, beverages, and chee cheong fun at a hawker centre. Lee was schooled in Jurong Secondary School. Bryan Wong
Bryan Wong Lok Kiang (, born on 30 January 1971) is a Singaporean television host and actor. Career Wong began his career as a child actor in 1981 and featured in several popular children's programmes on SBC. He began performing modelling assignments and commercials while still a teenager. In 1994, he joined TCS as a full-time artiste after a short stint as an interior designer. Sharon Au
Sharon Au (; born 13 August 1975) is a Singaporean former actress and host. Having joined the TCS during the mid-1990s, she won many awards as an artiste with MediaCorp before taking a sabbatical to pursue university education in 2005 on a scholarship. She returned to MediaCorp to serve her scholarship bond upon graduation in 2011, taking up an office executive position. Nonetheless, she was still invited to host at televised events and theatres. In February 2018, she resigned amicably from MediaCorp. In October 2018, she found an overseas job as an investment director in a private equity firm based in Paris, France. Guo Liang (actor)
Guo Liang (born 11 November 1970) is a Chinese nationality law, Chinese-born Singaporeans, Singaporean actor and television host. Career Guo graduated from the Shanghai Drama Institute and moved to Singapore during the 1990s to join the Television Corporation of Singapore (predecessor of MediaCorp). He joined TCS in 1994. He joined SPH MediaWorks in late 2000 but returned to MediaCorp in 2005 when the two companies merged. Yvonne Lim
Yvonne Lim (, born 28 September 1976) is a Singaporean actress. Early life and education Lim was born to Hokkien-speaking family. She studied at CHIJ St Theresa's Convent and graduated with a Diploma in Electronic, Computer & Communication Engineering (DECC) at Singapore Polytechnic in 1996. In an interview with SP's alumni magazine, she stated that she was a "shy girl" who rarely took part in extracurricular activities. At the recommendation of some friends, she took part in the Miss Singapore Polytechnic beauty pageant and finished first runner-up. Kym Ng
Ng Kwee Khim (; born 1 July 1967), best known by her stage name Kym Ng (), is a Singaporean television host and actress. She is known as one of Mediacorp’s Variety Ah Jies (综艺阿姐). Ng has received numerous accolades locally and regionally. At the Star Awards, she was recognised with 4 record-breaking Best Variety Show Host wins in 1998, 1999, 2011 and 2013 and two Best Supporting Actress wins in 2018 and 2021. Hong Huifang
Hong Huifang (born Ang Hwee Fong on 7 January 1961) is a Singaporean actress. Career Hong joined the SBC during the mid-1980s after completing the 5th drama training course alongside Yang Libing and Chen Tianwen, at age 22. Xiang Yun
Chen Cuichang (born 27 October 1961), better known by her stage name Xiang Yun, is a Singaporean actress & television host. She is commonly referred to as MediaCorp's first "Ah Jie" (Senior actress) for being among the first locally trained artistes and has been in the entertainment industry for more than 29 years. Career Chen is one of the first batch of graduates from SBC's drama training class.
