Stanwell is a rural town and locality in the Rockhampton Region, Queensland, Australia. In the the locality of Stanwell had a population of 337 people. Geography Stanwell is located on the Capricorn Highway and the Central Western railway line. Neerkol Creek flows past the town. History Early settlers in the Stanwell area were involved in dairying, quarrying or working for the railways. Stanwell State School opened on 7 November 1873. A postal receiving office opened in about 1874; a post office opened on 1 October 1880. A Primitive Methodist Church opened in Stanwell on Saturday 13 August 1881 by the Reverend R. Hartley. Although the land was provided by the Methodists, other denominations contributed to the construction of the church as part of an arrangement whereby the other denominations could also use the church for their services. Capricorn Highway
The Capricorn Highway is located in Central Queensland, Australia, and links the city of Rockhampton with western Queensland. The highway is long, and joins the Landsborough Highway at Barcaldine. Formerly National Route 66, Queensland began to convert to the alphanumeric system much of Australia had adopted in the early-2000s and is now designated as A4. The highway runs parallel with the Tropic of Capricorn, hence its name. Other towns situated along the highway include (from east to west): Gracemere, Kabra, Stanwell, Westwood, Gogango, Duaringa, Dingo, Bluff, Blackwater, Comet, Emerald, Bogantungan, Alpha and Jericho. Stanwell Power Station
Stanwell Power Station is a coal-fired power generation station located in Stanwell, south-west of Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia. At the time of construction, it was one of the largest industrial developments undertaken in Queensland. With a capacity to generate 1,445 megawatts (MW), Stanwell Power Station supplies electricity for distribution to customers via the state's high voltage electricity grid. Stanwell was commissioned in 1992 and became fully operational in 1996. It is located on 4,000 acres (1,600 hectares) of land. Construction of the station took seven years, with infrastructure built to withstand cyclonic winds. Fuel Coal is transport via rail from several Central Queensland coal mines. Rockhampton is a city in the Rockhampton Region of Central Queensland, Australia. St Josephs Cathedral, Rockhampton
St Josephs Cathedral is a heritage-listed Roman Catholic cathedral at 170 William Street, Allenstown, Rockhampton, Rockhampton Region, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Francis Drummond Greville Stanley and built from 1893 to 1982. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. History St Joseph's Roman Catholic Cathedral was constructed in 1893-1899 as the first catholic cathedral of Rockhampton manifesting the creation of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockhampton in 1882. John Cani
John Cani, also known as Giovanni Cani (22 December 1836 – 3 March 1898) was a Roman Catholic Bishop of Rockhampton. Early life Cani was born at Castel Bolognese, Province of Ravenna, Italy, and educated in his native province and at the Sapienza University of Rome, where he graduated D.D. and LL.D. Religious life He was ordained a priest in 1859, and accompanied the first Roman Catholic Bishop of Brisbane, Dr. James Quinn, to Queensland. He was appointed parish priest at Warwick, Queensland in the same year, and went to Brisbane in 1868. Ten years later Dr. Cani was made Pro-Vicar Apostolic of Northern Queensland. On the death of Bishop Quinn, the diocese of Brisbane was divided into two and Dr. Cani was appointed, by papal brief, Bishop of Rockhampton, and was consecrated in St. Mary's Cathedral, Sydney, by Archbishop Roger Vaughan, on 21 May 1882. ''The Morning Bulletin'' is an online newspaper servicing the city of Rockhampton and the surrounding areas of Central Queensland, Australia. From 1861 to 2020, ''The Morning Bulletin'' was published as a print edition, before then becoming an exclusively online newspaper. The final print edition was published on 27 June 2020. History The first issue of ''The Bulletin'' was launched on 9 July 1861. It is the second oldest business in Rockhampton, the oldest being the Criterion Hotel which was established in October 1860.
