Northern Football League
The Northern League is a men's football league in north east England. Having been founded in 1889, it is the second-oldest football league in the world still in existence after the English Football League. It contains two divisions; Division One and Division Two. Division One sits on the ninth tier of the English football league system, five divisions below the Football League. These leagues cover the historic counties of Durham, Northumberland, Cumberland and Yorkshire's North Riding. Geoff Strong
Geoffrey Hugh Strong (19 September 1937 – 17 June 2013) was an English professional footballer who scored 98 goals from 313 appearances in the Football League playing for Arsenal, Liverpool and Coventry City. He began his career as an inside forward, but went on to occupy every outfield position. Early life and career Strong was born in Kirkheaton, Northumberland, in 1937. He trained as a machine-tool fitter and played amateur football for his local club, Stanley United. Strong's 14 goals from his first four appearances of the 1957–58 Northern League season did not pass unnoticed, and in November 1957, he signed amateur forms with Football League First Division club Arsenal. Joe Wilson (footballer, Born 1911)
Joseph William Wilson (29 September 1911 – 3 April 1996) was an English professional footballer who played in the Football League for Southend United, Brentford and Barnsley as a right back. He later managed non-League clubs Blyth Spartans and Consett. Career Early years in non-League football A right back, Wilson spent his early career moving around Northern and North Eastern League clubs Tow Law Town, Crook Town, Annfield Plain and Stanley United. He departed the latter club in December 1927. Football League (1927–1947) Wilson signed for First Division club Newcastle United for a £50 fee in December 1927. He had to wait until 7 December 1929 for his professional debut, which came in a 2–2 draw with Aston Villa at St James' Park. Wilson departed the club in July 1930 and transferred to Third Division South club Southend United for a £500 fee. Reuben Vine
Reuben Vine (12 September 1903 – 13 January 1969) was an English footballer who scored 11 goals from 48 appearances in the Football League playing as an outside left for Darlington between 1929 and 1931. He was on the books of Gateshead without playing for their League team, and played non-league football for Stanley United and Eden Colliery Welfare. Personal life Vine was born in 1903 in Leadgate, County Durham. His father, Joseph, was a coal miner originally from Cornwall, and his mother, Barbara Ann ''née'' Day, was a local girl. By the time of the 1911 Census, Vine's father was dead and his mother worked as a charwoman to support her five young sons. Vine married Phyllis May Barham in Ashbourne, Derbyshire, in 1938. The 1939 Register finds the couple living in Cheddleton, Staffordshire, where Vine is working as a mental nurse at the county asylum. Wearside Football League
The Wearside Football League is a non-league football competition based in northern England. It consists of three divisions which sits at steps 7 to 9 (or levels 11 to 13) of the National League System and is a feeder to the Northern League Division Two. Founded in 1892, the Wearside League's level has fluctuated in its history, though it has typically sat below the Northern League. The league's high point was probably during the 1960s and 70s after several teams from the defunct North Eastern League joined it; Wearside League teams won the FA Vase in 1978 and 1981. With the restructuring of the National League System in the early 2000s its place at step 7 became fully established, helped by a merger with the Durham Alliance Combination League in 2017.
