Stanley Thomas Counts
Stanley Thomas Counts (3 July 1926 – 27 January 2015) was a United States Navy admiral whose Cold War military service extended through the Korean War and Vietnam War. Early life and education Counts was born 3 July 1926 in Weleetka, Oklahoma. He was a son of Claude and Thelma (Thomas) Counts. He was commissioned as an ensign upon graduation from the United States Naval Academy in June 1949. Naval career Following commissioning, Counts reported aboard the destroyer and later served as combat information officer aboard the attack transport during the Korean War. He later served as operations officer aboard the escort destroyer and as executive officer of the destroyer escort . Weleetka, Oklahoma
Weleetka is a town in Okfuskee County, Oklahoma, United States. It is approximately southeast of Okemah, the county seat. The name is a Creek word meaning "running water." The population was 998 at the 2010 census, a decline of 1.6 percent from the figure of 1,014 in 2000. Rear Admiral
Rear admiral is a senior naval flag officer rank, equivalent to a major general and air vice marshal and above that of a commodore and captain, but below that of a vice admiral. It is regarded as a two star "admiral" rank. It is often regarded as a two-star rank with a NATO code of OF-7. RIM-7 Sea Sparrow
RIM-7 Sea Sparrow is a U.S. ship-borne short-range anti-aircraft and anti-missile weapon system, primarily intended for defense against anti-ship missiles. The system was developed in the early 1960s from the AIM-7 Sparrow air-to-air missile as a lightweight "point-defense" weapon that could be retrofitted to existing ships as quickly as possible, often in place of existing gun-based anti-aircraft weapons. In this incarnation, it was a very simple system guided by a manually aimed radar illuminator. After its introduction, the system underwent significant development into an automated system similar to other US Navy missiles like the RIM-2 Terrier. "V" Device
A "V" device is a metal capital letter "V" with serifs which, when worn on certain decorations awarded by the United States Armed Forces, distinguishes an award for heroism or valor in combat instead of for meritorious service or achievement. The decorations with which a "V" may be authorized differ among the military services, as well as the manner in which the "V" is worn and the name by which it is referred to.
