Stangaland
Stangaland is a former municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. It was part of the traditional district of Haugaland. The municipality of Stangaland existed from 1909 until 1965 when it was merged into the newly created Karmøy Municipality. The municipality encompassed the rural areas surrounding the coastal city of Kopervik on the island of Karmøy. The administrative centre was the village of Stangaland just outside the town of Kopervik. History The municipality called ''Kopervik herred'' was established on 1 January 1909 when it was split off from the municipality of Avaldsnes. Initially, Kopervik had a population of 1,001. The rural municipality surrounded the town of Kopervik which was a separate municipality. In 1917, the name of the municipality was changed to ''Stangaland'' to better distinguish the municipality from the neighboring town with the same name. List Of Former Municipalities Of Norway
This is a list of former municipalities of Norway, i.e. municipalities that no longer exist. When the local council system was introduced in Norway in 1837-38, the country had 392 municipalities. In 1958 the number had grown to a total of 744 rural municipalities, 64 city municipalities as well as a small number of small seaports with '' ladested'' status. A committee led by Nikolai Schei, formed in 1946 to examine the situation, proposed hundreds of mergers to reduce the number of municipalities and improve the quality of local administration. Most of the mergers were carried out, albeit to significant popular protest. As of January 2006 there are 431 municipalities in Norway, and there are plans for further mergers and political pressure to do so. Avaldsnes (municipality)
Avaldsnes is a former municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1838 until 1965 when it was dissolved. The area was an ancient centre of power on the west coast of Norway and is the site of one of Norway's more important areas of cultural history. The administrative centre of the municipality was the village of Avaldsnes. The municipality encompassed the area surrounding the Førresfjorden and the area surrounding the central part of the Karmsundet strait, plus the central part of the island of Karmøy. Åkra is a former municipality in the traditional district of Haugaland in Rogaland county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1892 until 1965 and it encompassed the central part of the western coast of the island of Karmøy. The administrative centre was the village of Åkrehamn. History The municipality of ''Aakra'' was established on 1 January 1892 when it was split off from the municipality of Skudenes. Initially, the new municipality had a population of 1,962. On 1 January 1965, the municipality of Åkra was dissolved due to recommendations by the Schei Committee. Åkra was merged with the neighboring municipalities of Avaldsnes, Skudenes, Stangaland, and Torvastad and with the towns of Kopervik and Skudeneshavn to form the new, larger municipality of Karmøy. Kopervik
Kopervik is the largest town on the island of Karmøy in Rogaland county, Norway. It is also the administrative centre of the municipality of Karmøy. It is part of the traditional district of Haugaland. The town was also an independent municipality from 1866 until 1965. The town has a population (2019) of 11,561 and a population density of . Skudeneshavn
(also known as Skudeneshamn or simply Skudenes) is a town in Karmøy municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. It is located on the southernmost tip of the island of Karmøy at the entrance to the Boknafjorden and Karmsundet strait. The town is part of the traditional district of Haugaland. Skudenes is a former municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. It was part of the traditional district of Haugaland. The municipality existed from 1838 until its dissolution in 1965. The administrative centre was the town of Skudeneshavn (which technically was a separate municipality). Haugaland
Haugaland or Haugalandet is a traditional district situated on the western coast of Norway. Haugaland is one of the 15 traditional districts located within the Vestlandet region. Geographically, Haugaland is a peninsula between Bømlafjorden in Vestland county and Boknafjorden in the northern part of Rogaland county, Nord-Rogaland. It is bordered to the east of the isthmus between Ølensfjorden and Sandeidfjorden in Vindafjord municipality.
