Standish railway station is a closed railway station in Standish, England, situated where the line bridged Rectory Lane (the B5239). Standish was in the historic county of Lancashire. History The station was opened by the North Union Railway in 1838 as "Standish Lane". It was renamed as plain "Standish" by 1844. The North Union later became part of the London and North Western Railway. Standish is a small town in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, Greater Manchester, England. Within the boundaries of the historic county of Lancashire, it is on the A49 road between Chorley and Wigan, near Junction 27 of the M6 motorway. The population of the town was 13,278 in the 2011 census. Formed around a crossroads, the village has grown into a small town as urban expansion between Manchester and Liverpool extends outwards. Boar's Head railway station served the southern part of the village of Standish. History The Wigan Branch Railway (WBR) was authorised on 29 May 1830 to connect the town of Wigan to the Liverpool and Manchester Railway at , and it opened on 3 September 1832. A railway route between Wigan and the town of Preston, in the form of the Wigan & Preston Railway, was authorised by Parliament on 22 April 1831; but before it was built, this company amalgamated with the WBR under an Act of 22 May 1834, to form the North Union Railway (NUR) - the first railway amalgamation to be sanctioned by Act of Parliament. The London Midland Region (LMR) was one of the six regions created on the formation of the nationalised British Railways (BR), and initially consisted of ex-London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) lines in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
