Standard Catalog Of Comic Books
The ''Standard Catalog of Comic Books'' is the world's largest book about comic books. A joint production of the team behind ''Comics Buyer's Guide'' magazine and the CD-ROM program ComicBase, the first edition was released in 2002 from Krause Publications, known today as F+W Publications. The authors of the series are Maggie Thompson, Brent Frankenhoff, Peter Bickford, and John Jackson Miller. The fourth edition, released in 2005, is 1,624 pages long and indexes more than 165,000 comic books, including information about comic-book creators, story titles, publication dates, and cover prices. The book also includes pricing for comics, including indexes of actual auction results from auction sites including eBay. Comic Books
A comic book, also called comicbook, comic magazine or (in the United Kingdom and Ireland) simply comic, is a publication that consists of comics art in the form of sequential juxtaposed panels that represent individual scenes. Panels are often accompanied by descriptive prose and written narrative, usually, dialogue contained in word balloons emblematic of the comics art form. "Comic Cuts" was a British comic published from 1890 to 1953. It was preceded by "Ally Sloper's Half Holiday" (1884) which is notable for its use of sequential cartoons to unfold narrative. These British comics existed alongside of the popular lurid "Penny dreadfuls" (such as "Spring-heeled Jack"), boys' " Story papers" and the humorous Punch (magazine) which was the first to use the term "cartoon" in its modern sense of a humorous drawing. ComicBase
ComicBase is a computer program for tracking comic book collections. It was created in 1992 by Peter Bickford as an Apple Macintosh program. A Windows version was introduced in 1996. As of February 2015, it is on its nineteenth version (dubbed ComicBase 2017) and is available for computers running Microsoft Windows Windows 7, and later. Its database includes pricing and notes on over 800,000 individual comic book issues, and allows users to sell their comics online at a website marketplace called Atomic Avenue. ComicBase 2017 includes a "My Comics" web app which uses works in conjunction with the desktop software to allow users to view and update their collections on virtually any mobile device through the use of responsive design techniques, including Apple, Windows, and Android smartphones and tablets, as well as devices like the PSP and Kindle. Krause Publications is an American publisher of hobby magazines and books. Originally a company founded and based in Iola, Wisconsin, they relocated to Stevens Point, Wisconsin, in April 2018. The company was started by Chester L. Krause (19232016) upon the publication in October 1952 of the first issue of '' Numismatic News''. In the coin collecting community the company is best known for its ''Standard Catalog of World Coins'', a series of coin catalogs commonly referred to as ''Krause-Mishler'' catalogs or simply ''Krause'' catalogs; they provide information, pricing, and Krause-Mishler (KM) numbers referring to coin rarity and value. Maggie Thompson (born Margaret Curtis; November 29, 1942), is an American longtime editor of the now-defunct comic book industry news magazine ''Comics Buyer's Guide'', science fiction fan, and collector of comics. Brent Frankenhoff (born February 10, 1966) is an American author and editor of books and magazines about comic books, best known for his work on ''Comics Buyer's Guide'' and the ''Standard Catalog of Comic Books''. A collector of comic books since childhood, he joined Krause Publications in 1992 as an assistant to Don Thompson (Comics Buyer's Guide), Don Thompson and Maggie Thompson. In 1995, he co-authored the first of a line of price guides, the ''Comic Book Checklist and Price Guide'' (now on its 15th edition). John Jackson Miller (born January 12, 1968) is an American science-fiction author, comic book writer, and commentator, known for his work on the ''Star Wars'' franchise and his research into comic book circulation history, as presented in the Standard Catalog of Comic Books series and the Comichron website. Capital City Distribution
Capital City Distribution was a Madison, Wisconsin-based comic book distributor which operated from 1980 to 1996 when they were acquired by rival Diamond Comic Distributors. Under the name Capital Comics, they also published comics from 1981 to 1984. During most of its years of operation, Capital City introduced many supply chain innovations and controlled much of the American Midwest's comics distribution market. More so than their rivals Diamond and Heroes World Distribution, Capital City supported independent publishers as much as big mainstream companies like DC Comics and Marvel Comics.
