"Stand by Me" should not be confused with "Stand by Me Father", by Sam Cooke and J. W. Alexander. Though sometimes known as "Stand by Me Father", "Stand by Me" is a 1905 gospel song by the Rev. Charles Albert Tindley. Although often thought to be a "traditional spiritual", Tindley copyrighted the song in 1905. The song of the same name by Ben E. King draws on Tindley's song. Charles Albert Tindley
Charles Albert Tindley (July 7, 1851 – July 26, 1933) was an American Methodist minister and gospel music composer. His composition "I'll Overcome Someday" is credited as the basis for the U.S. Civil Rights anthem "We Shall Overcome". Another of his hymns is " (Take Your Burden to the Lord and) Leave It There" (1916), as well as "What Are They Doing in Heaven?" (1901). Often referred to as "The Prince of Preachers", he educated himself, became a minister and founded one of the largest Methodist congregations serving the African-American community on the East Coast of the United States. The Caravans were an American gospel music group that was started in 1947 by Robert Anderson. It reached its peak popularity during the 1950s and 1960s, launching the careers of a number of artists, including: Delores Washington, Albertina Walker, Bessie Griffin, Cassietta George, Dorothy Norwood, Inez Andrews, Shirley Caesar, Josephine Howard, Rev.
