Stan Booth
Stan Booth (3 December 1933 – 30 August 2007) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1950s. Booth was a rover and often rested on the half forward flank, contributing over a goal a game for Essendon. He spent most of the 1952 season in the reserves and was a member of their premiership team but also made five appearances in the seniors. From 1953 he was a regular in the Essendon side, kicking 32 goals in 1954 and playing in the 1957 Grand Final loss to Melbourne. Earlier in 1957, he was involved in some controversy when in a game against that year's premiers he was penalised for kicking the ball out of bounds deliberately, after a tackle from Ron Barassi. With just seconds remaining, Athol Webb kicked the winning goal from an angle on the half forward flank to give his team a one-point victory. Essendon Football Club
The Essendon Football Club, nicknamed the Bombers, is a professional Australian rules football club. The club plays in the Australian Football League (AFL), the game's premier competition. The club was formed by the McCracken family in their Ascot Vale, Victoria, Ascot Vale home "Alisa", and while the exact date is unknown, it is generally accepted to have been in 1872. The club’s first recorded game took place on 7 June 1873 against a Carlton Second 20. From 1878 until 1896, the club played in the Victorian Football Association then joined seven other clubs in October 1896 to form the breakaway Victorian Football League (later changed to AFL in 1990). Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. The 1957 VFL Grand Final was an Australian rules football game contested between the Melbourne Football Club and Essendon Football Club, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on 21 September 1957. It was the 60th annual Grand Final of the Victorian Football League, staged to determine the premiers for the 1957 VFL season. The match, attended by 100,324 spectators, was won by Melbourne by 61 points, marking that club's ninth premiership victory. Ron Barassi
Ronald Dale Barassi Jr. (born 27 February 1936) is a former Australian rules footballer, coach and media personality. Regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of the game, Barassi was the first player to be inaugurated into the Australian Football Hall of Fame as a "Legend", and is one of three Australian rules footballers to be elevated to the same status in the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. When Barassi was five years old, his father, Melbourne Football Club player Ron Barassi Sr., died in action at Tobruk during World War II. Barassi was determined to follow in his father's footsteps at Melbourne, and heavy lobbying by the club to recruit him resulted in the introduction of the father-son rule, still in use by the AFL. Athol Webb
Athol Webb (born 13 September 1935) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the late 1950s. A small forward, Webb was a premiership player with Melbourne in 1956 and 1957. He kicked five goals in the 1956 VFL grand final win and topped their goalkicking in their 1957 VFL premiership season with 56 goals. He represented both Victoria and his home state of Tasmania at interstate football. Sandy Bay Football Club
The Sandy Bay Football Club was an Australian rules football club based in Sandy Bay, Tasmania. The team participated in the Tasmanian Football League from 1945 to 1997. Club history The club was founded in November 1944 as a result of a meeting called by the late Bill Barwick at Wrest Point Riviera (now Wrest Point Casino). With World War II in its final stages it became clear that some former TANFL clubs would not survive and as a result, the League's Constitution was amended to provide for district football. In 1945 four clubs, Sandy Bay, North Hobart, New Town and Hobart, took part in the revamped competition.
