Stamford Pioneers
The Stamford Pioneers were a minor league baseball team based in Stamford, Connecticut. From 1947 to 1949, Stamford teams played as members of the Class B level Colonial League, winning the 1947 championship with an integrated roster in the era of segregated baseball. The Pioneers were preceded by the 1947 Stamford Bombers, with the teams hosting minor league home games at Mitchell Stadium. History Stamford first hosted the 1888 Stamford team, who played the season as members of the Connecticut State League. The 1947 Stamford Bombers became members of the six–team, Class B level Colonial League, which reformed after last playing in 1915. The Bombers were joined by the Bridgeport Bees, New London Raiders, Port Chester Clippers, Poughkeepsie Giants and Waterbury Timers in beginning league play on May 7, 1947. Joe Glenn (baseball)
Joseph Charles Glenn (November 19, 1908 – May 6, 1985) was a backup catcher in Major League Baseball who played for the New York Yankees (1932–33, 1935–38), St. Louis Browns (1939) and Boston Red Sox (1940). Glenn batted and threw right-handed. He was born in Dickson City, Pennsylvania. Glenn caught Babe Ruth during his last pitching game, and also caught Ted Williams in Williams' only pitching appearance: it was at Fenway Park on August 24, 1940. In an eight-season career, Glenn posted a .252 batting average with five home runs and 89 RBI in 248 games played. The Torrington Braves were a short lived minor league baseball team based in Torrington, Connecticut. In 1950, the Braves played as members of the Class B level 1950 Colonial League, which permanently folded during the 1950 season with the Braves in fourth place. Torrington hosted home minor league games at Fuessenich Park. History Minor league baseball began in Torrington, Connecticut in 1896, when the Torrington Tornadoes became members of the Naugatuck Valley League. The 1897 Torrington Demons played the season in the Connecticut League. After a five decade absence, minor league baseball returned to Torrington in 1950 for a partial season, when the Stamford Pioneers, a Colonial League franchise was replaced by a new Torrington franchise.
