Stage A Number
''Stage a Number'' is a TV series on the DuMont Television Network which was broadcast in the US on Wednesdays at 9pm ET from September 10, 1952, to May 20, 1953. It was a live talent show for dancers, singers, acrobats and other entertainers. A panel of celebrity judges decided on two winners who were invited to appear the following week. Bill Wendell was the host. Production ''Stage a Number'' was a sustaining program that originated at WABD. Roger Gerry was the producer, and Barry Shear was the director. Bill Dalzell was the writer, and Bill Wirges was the music director. Episode status As with most DuMont series, no episodes are known to exist. Bill Wendell
William Joseph Wenzel Jr. (March 22, 1924 – April 14, 1999), known as Bill Wendell, was an NBC television staff announcer for almost his entire professional career. Life and career Born in New York City, Wendell served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II and graduated from Fordham University with a degree in speech. He began his radio career in summer of 1947''Yonkers Herald Statesman'', July 18, 1959, pg. 6 at WHAM in Rochester, New York. He moved to WWJ in Detroit, where he worked in both radio and TV. Wendell returned to Manhattan in 1952 when he landed a job on the DuMont television network emceeing several shows before jumping to NBC in 1955. He was a regular on the 1955-56 version of ''The Ernie Kovacs Show'', serving as the show's announcer, as well as a participant in sketches such as "Mr. Question Man" (a parody of ''The Answer Man''). The DuMont Television Network was launched in 1946 and ceased broadcasting in 1956. Allen DuMont, who created the network, preserved most of what it produced in kinescope format. By 1958, however, much of the library had been destroyed to recover the silver content of the film prints, and eventually the remaining material was simply discarded. This is a list of programs broadcast by the DuMont Television Network, which operated in the United States from 1942 to 1956. All regularly scheduled programs which were aired on the DuMont network are listed below, regardless of whether they originated at DuMont. Some DuMont network series were actually broadcast from Baltimore's WAAM-TV, Chicago's WGN-TV, Cincinnati's WCPO-TV, or Philadelphia's WFIL.
