Stafford GP
__NOTOC__ The Stafford GP is a criterium cycle race held in the town of Stafford owned and organised by Leadout Cycling Ltd under the technical regulations of British Cycling. Since 2010 it has been part of British Cycling’s Elite Circuit Race Series. History The origins of today’s Stafford GP go back to the Stafford Town Centre Races held in the 1980s. Like today, criteriums were an important part of professional cycling. Whilst not part of the televised Kelloggs, the races attracted a star-studded field and huge crowds. Five editions were held during the 1980s. The first edition of the race was won by Roger Willett from Finchfield, who later rode for the Great Britain senior team. The undisputed king of the Stafford Town Centre Races was Steve Joughin. As a local rider who settled in Stoke-on-Trent at the start of his professional career and riding for local sponsors Moducel. Stafford
Stafford () is a market town and the county town of Staffordshire, in the West Midlands region of England. It lies about north of Wolverhampton, south of Stoke-on-Trent and northwest of Birmingham. The town had a population of 70,145 in the 2021 census, It is the main settlement within the larger borough of Stafford which had a population of 136,837 (2021). History Stafford means "ford" by a staithe (landing place). The original settlement was on a dry sand and gravel peninsula that offered a strategic crossing point in the marshy valley of the River Sow, a tributary of the River Trent. There is still a large area of marshland north-west of the town, which is subject to flooding and did so in 1947, 2000, 2007 and 2019. Christopher Ryan Opie (born 22 July 1987) is a British cyclist. Outside of racing, Opie has been a contributor and presenter for the Global Cycling Network. Career Born in Truro, Cornwall, Opie grew up on a small beef and dairy farm. He attended Kea Primary and Penair Secondary Schools in Truro. He began cycling competitively at the age of 10 and progressed to lead the British National Junior RR Series in 2005. In 2006, Opie raced in France for UC Aubenas and he battled with a slight eating disorder and, in 2007, with Glandular Fever, but returned to racing in 2008, when he was based in the Netherlands and Belgium. Ian Wilkinson (born 14 April 1979) is a British racing cyclist from England, who currently rides for British amateur team Spartans Velo Club. A prolific rider, he competes at the top level in cross country and marathon mountain bike racing, cyclo-cross, circuit and road racing. He is a multiple national champion, winning championships as a junior, under 23 and senior rider. He has represented Great Britain at many international events such as World Championships and World Cups in several disciplines. Outside of cycling, Wilkinson's occupation is as a builder. Dean Downing
Dean "Deano" Downing (born 24 January 1975) is an English retired bicycle racer, specialising in road cycling who last rode for NFTO Pro Cycling. Downing was educated at Wales High School and Sheffield Hallam University, where he graduated in 1998 with a degree in Construction Management. He rode for the DFL-Cyclingnews-Litespeed team in 2006 and is the older brother of former British champion Russell Downing. In 2004, he represented Great Britain at the World Track Championships. For the 2007 season, Downing rode for the original Rapha Condor team and focussed on the British Premier Calendar. In 2008 the team became Rapha-Condor-Recycling.co.uk. George Richard Atkins (born 18 August 1991) is a British former track and road racing cyclist, who rode professionally between 2014 and 2016. He was a member of British Cycling's Olympic Development Programme. In 2009 he won the junior race at the British National Road Race Championships. Graham Briggs (born 14 July 1983) is a British road racing cyclist, who currently rides for British amateur team Clancy Briggs Cycling Academy. Career Born in Rossington, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, Briggs initially played football as a youngster before switching to cycling, initially off-road as a cyclo-cross rider and then the discipline of mountain biking, until the foot and mouth crisis of 2001. He competed for Great Britain in the Under-23 road race at the 2003 UCI Road World Championships in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The majority of his road racing career has been spent in city centre competitions leading to successes in the Elite Circuit Race Series in recent years.
