Staatsarchiv Des Kantons St. Gallen
The St. Gallen State Archive (german: Staatsarchiv des Kantons St. Gallen) is the archive for the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland. Since the canton was founded in 1803, it has preserved the records relating to the cantonal authorities, the cantonal administration and the institutions of the state. It also contains records from the legal predecessors of today's canton. Organisationally, the State Archive is part of the Department of the Interior, located in the Office of Culture. Responsibilities The Gesetz über Aktenführung und Archivierung (Act on Filing and Archiving – sGS 147.1) of 19 April 2011 defines the State Archive as the highest specialised cantonal body for filing and archiving. It decides on the archival value of documents offered and guarantees permanent storage and access to the records. Legal certainty is a principle in national and international law which holds that the law must provide those subject to it with the ability to regulate their conduct. The legal system needs to permit those subject to the law to regulate their conduct with certainty and to protect those subject to the law from arbitrary use of state power. Sax-Forstegg
The Lordship of Sax-Forstegg was a territory in the Alpine Rhine Valley, including the settlements of Sennwald and Altstätten, now part of the canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland. It was named for the baronial family of Sax and their castle Forstegg. It was created with the division of the old Lordship of Sax into Hohensax and Frischenberg in the late 14th century. In 1458, the lords of Sax-Forstegg entered a pact with the Swiss Confederacy. In addition, they were also citizens of St. Gallen from 1463, and citizens of Zürich from 1486. Baron Ulrich VII von Sax received the villages of Frischenberg and Lienz as a gift from the Confederacy in 1490. Lichtensteig
Lichtensteig is a municipality in the ''Wahlkreis'' (constituency) of Toggenburg in the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland. History Lichtensteig was founded by the counts of Toggenburg in the early 13th century, first mentioned in 1228 as ''Liehtunsteige''. A market is mentioned in 1374, and the right to hold markets is confirmed in 1400. A letter of privileges issued by the lords of Raron 1439 confirms the existence of a council of twelve burghers, and the joint appointment of judges by the burghers and the land lords. The mayor ( Schultheiss) was appointed by the land lord from a list of candidates compiled by the burghers. After the acquisition of the Toggenburg by the Abbey of St. Gallen in 1468, Lichtensteig became the seat of the abbot's reeve. Gallus Jacob Baumgartner (18 October 1797 in Altstätten, Switzerland – 12 July 1869 at St. Gall) was a Swiss statesman and prominent federalist. Biography After attending the Gymnasium in St. Gall he studied law at Fribourg, Switzerland, and in Vienna. From 1817 to 1819 he was a tutor in Hungary. Returning to Vienna in 1819, he was arrested there after the murder of August von Kotzebue by Karl Ludwig Sand on the false suspicion of belonging to a Swiss political society and was expelled form the city in 1820. He began his political career as keeper of the archives of his native canton, St. Gall. This position gave him the opportunity of learning the topography, history, laws, and legal relations of the canton. In 1822 he was made official secretary; in 1825 he became a member of the great council of the canton and was appointed chancellor. Josef Anton Henne
Josef Anton Henne (known as Anton Henne, born 22 July 1798 in Sargans, died 22 November 1870 in Wolfhalden, Appenzell) was a Swiss historian and politician active during the formative phase of the modern Swiss state. Henne's paternal grandparents had immigrated to Sargans from Allgäu, Bavaria. He entered Pfävers abbey at the age of 12 and became a novice at 17, but after a period of uncertainty, he left the monastery on 22 July 1817. He was further educated at Lucerne and at the universities of Heidelberg and Freiburg. In 1826 he became curator of the St. Gallen Abbey Library. In 1828, he published the first volume of a popular History of Switzerland (covering the period up to 1400). His aim was to present counter-position to the historiography of Heinrich Zschokke.
