St Philip's Hospital
St Philip's Hospital is a former 100-bedded capacity hospital located in Santa Venera, Malta. It has been closed since 2012. History A letter of intent approving the set up of a private hospital was issued by the Government of Malta in 1992. A year later in 1993, the company owning the hospital, Golden Shepherd Ltd, was registered. It was owned by Frank Portelli. Construction of the hospital was completed and it was opened in 1995. Financial difficulties and closure The private hospital closed its doors in 2012 after running into financial problems. According to the last set of accounts filed with the Registry of Companies for 2006, the company running it reported a loss of more than €500,000. It was subsequently put up for sale. Santa Venera
Santa Venera is a town in the Central Region of Malta, with a population of 8,834 (2021). It is located between the towns of Birkirkara and Ħamrun, and it also borders Qormi and Msida. History The Old Church of Santa Venera was built in 1473, and it was enlarged in 1500, rebuilt between 1658 and 1688 and again in the 19th century. This church remained as the parish church until 1989. A new church was blessed in 2005. In 1610, Grandmaster Alof de Wignacourt financed the building of the Wignacourt Aqueduct to transport water from springs in Rabat and Dingli to the capital Valletta, passing through various towns along the way including Santa Venera. Frank Portelli is a former member of the Maltese Parliament, serving during the 1987-1992 legislature. He was born on 8 June, 1944 in Hamrun Hamrun (; ) is a town in the Southern Region of Malta, with a population of 9,244 as of March 2014.
