St Ninian's Crossroads
St Ninian's Crossroads ( gv, Ballaquayle, Quayle, or MacFayle's farm - the quarterland of Ballaquayle) is situated between the TT Grandstand and the 1st Milestone road-side marker on the Snaefell Mountain Course on the primary A2 Douglas to Ramsey road in the town of Douglas in the Isle of Man. The St. Ninian's Crossroads is a major road junction of the A2 Glencrutchery Road with the A2 Bray Hill, the A22 Ballanard Road and Ballaquayle Road in Douglas. The area is dominated by St. Ninian's Church (dedicated to Ninian of Whithorn) designed by W.D.Caroe and is a major landmark on the skyline of the town of Douglas. The land to build the church in 1913 was bequeathed by Henry Bloom Noble through trustees of his estate. In 1924, the Douglas High School for Boys was constructed on a nearby site by the Isle of Man Education Board and is now the coeducational St Ninian's High School (''Schoill Ard Noo Ninian''). The RAC Tourist Trophy (sometimes called the International Tourist Trophy) is a motor racing award presented by the Royal Automobile Club (RAC) to the overall victor of a motor race in the United Kingdom. Established in 1905, it is the world's oldest continuous motor race. The 18-carat gold trophy is based on Giambologna's sculpture of the Greek god Hermes. Willaston Circuit
The Willaston Circuit is a 3.5-mile road racing course on the Isle of Man used for cycle racing and classic car racing. The inaugural race was in 1936 and the course was last used in 2000 by the Manx Motor Racing Club before the foot & mouth outbreak in the British Isles halted all motor racing on the Isle of Man in 2001. Clypse Course
The Clypse Course describes a motor-cycle racing course used for the Isle of Man TT Races between 1954 and 1959. The course is long and is in the parish of Onchan in the Isle of Man. The course uses two short sections of the Snaefell Mountain Course which includes the primary A18 road between Cronk-ny-Mona and Creg-ny-Baa used in the reverse direction. Also, the primary A18 Mountain Road between Signpost Corner and Governor's Bridge. The highest point of the course is above sea level at Ballacarrooin Hill (Ordnance Survey ). The name Clypse is probably a contraction from the Scandinavian word ''Kleppsstar'' ( Kleppr's farm) which gives the modern name of Clypse Beg and Clypse Mooar. Frederick James Walker
Frederick James 'Frank' Walker (1876 – 19 May 1914) was an Irish motorcycle racer who competed at the Isle of Man TT races. A hat manufacturer by trade and native of Kingstown, County Dublin, Ireland, Frank Walker competed at the 1914 TT races riding a Royal Enfield motorcycle in the Junior TT race. After leading on the first lap, Walker suffered tyre problems and eventually dropped to sixth place. Junior TT
The Junior TT is a motorcycle road race that takes place during the Isle of Man TT festival; an annual event at the end of May and beginning of June. Between 1949 and 1976 this race was part of the Grand Prix motorcycle racing season. Engine capacity The 1911 Isle of Man TT was the first time the Junior TT race took place and was open to 300cc single-cylinder and 340cc twin cylinder motor-cycles and was contested over 5 laps of the new 37.5 mile Mountain Course. The first event on the new course was the Junior TT Race and was contested by 35 entrants. It was won by Percy J. Evans riding a Humber motor-cycle in 3 hours, 37 minutes and 7 seconds at an average speed of 41.45 mph. 1914 Isle Of Man TT
The 1914 Isle of Man Tourist Trophy was the last held before the outbreak of the First World War. Bad weather overshadowed the Junior race on Tuesday, 19 May, but Eric and Cyril Williams gained first and second place for AJS having passed Irish newcomer Frank Walker who had been leading on the second lap but for an unfortunate accident. Walker remounted his Royal Enfield, chased after the two men with determination but was parted from his machine twice more and still managed to flash over the finish line into third place while the two William's were still congratulating each other, but he failed to turn onto Bray Hill for the machine examination, crashed again on a barrier and succumbed to his injuries four days later. Manx Grand Prix
The Manx Grand Prix motorcycle races are held on the Isle of Man TT Course (or 'Snaefell Mountain Course, Mountain Circuit') every year for a two-week period, usually spanning the end of August and early September. New for 2022 is a period reduction from 14 to 9 days. The MGP or Manx (as it is more commonly known) is considered to be the amateur rider's alternative and a learning experience for the Isle of Man TT races held in May/June. The event differs from the TT in that it does not cater for Sidecar TT, sidecars. Four Inch Course
The Four Inch Course was a road-racing circuit first used for the 1908 Tourist Trophy Race for cars, held on public roads closed for racing by an Act of Tynwald (the parliament of the Isle of Man). The name of the course derives from the regulations for the 1908 Tourist Trophy adopted by the Royal Automobile Club, which limited the competitors' engines to a cylinder-diameter of four inches. The Four-Inch Course was adopted by the Auto-Cycle Club for the 1911 Isle of Man TT Races. The TT Grandstand including the startline, pit lane, re-fuellers, merchandising, scoreboard and paddocks for the Isle of Man TT and Manx Grand Prix races is situated on the A2 Glencrutchery Road, in the town of Douglas, Isle of Man. History The startline for the 1911 TT races was originally situated on a level section of the A2 Quarterbridge Road between Selborne Drive and Woodlands Lodge in Douglas. The startline and refuelling area was moved to the top of Bray Hill for the 1914 TT races, and then moved in 1920 to the Nobles Park area of the A2 Glencrutchery Road at the junction of Greenfield Road in Douglas.
