St Cyres Comprehensive School
St Cyres School is an 11–18 mixed, English-medium, community secondary school and sixth form in Penarth, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales. It was established in 1958. Until June 2012, the school was split over two sites: the larger site at Penarth, and a smaller lower school (years 7 to 9) in the nearby village of Dinas Powys. The school has since been unified and moved into a new site, in the Penarth Learning Community. History The school has had three names in its short history: St Cyres Secondary Modern School, St Cyres Comprehensive School, and now, St Cyres School. The school was established in 1958 and celebrated its 50th anniversary year during the Autumn term of 2008. Several special events took place marking the anniversary. Audrey Evelyn Jones
Audrey Evelyn Jones (15 October 1929 – 16 August 2014) was an English teacher and campaigner for women's rights. She joined the staff of the St Cyres School in the Vale of Glamorgan in 1960 and rose to the position of deputy head teacher. During her career, Jones encouraged young girls to study mathematics and art to combat sexism in education, worked to further girls' education and on sex discrimination research in schools. In retirement she focused on campaigning for women's rights with the Wales Assembly of Women (WAW) on the world scene and through the Vale of Glamorgan Labour Party. Brian Peter Leon Lightman (born 15 June 1955) is a British trade union leader who is the former General Secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL, based in Leicester). The ASCL has around 18,000 teachers. Early life He attended Westminster City Grammar School from 1966-73. At the University of Southampton he gained a BA in German in 1978 and a Modern Languages PGCE in 1979. Career He taught German and French from 1979-84 at Hazelwick School in Crawley in West Sussex. Jamie Ringer
James Edward Ringer (born 18 January 1976) is a retired Wales international rugby union player. He is currently the defensive coach for Merthyr RFC and Sales Director for Cornerstone Commercial Finance. Domestic career A flanker, capable of playing both blind and open-side, he started playing in the Welsh premiership for Cardiff RFC at the age of 19. Ringer moved to Bridgend RFC in 1999 before joining Neath RFC in 2002. Ringer's time at Neath was short as he joined Newport Gwent Dragons in 2003. Carys Davina Grey-Thompson, Baroness Grey-Thompson, (born 26 July 1969), known as Tanni Grey-Thompson, is a Welsh politician, television presenter and former wheelchair racer. Athletic career Grey-Thompson's Paralympic career started in the 100m at the Junior National Games for Wales in 1984. Her international career began in 1988 in Seoul, where she won a bronze medal in the 400m. As a young athlete she also competed in wheelchair basketball. Her fifth and last Paralympic Games were in Athens (2004) where she won two gold medals in wheelchair racing in the 100m and 400m. David Michael Rhys Davies (born 3 March 1985) is a Welsh former competitive swimmer who has represented Wales at the Commonwealth Games, and swam for Great Britain at Summer Olympics, world championships and European championships, winning medals in each of those major international championships. Davies specialised in long-distance freestyle and open water events. The Welsh Baccalaureate ( cy, Bagloriaeth Cymru), or Welsh Bacc, is an educational qualification delivered in secondary schools and colleges across Wales.
