St. Térèse Church
The Ankara St. Térèse Church ( tr, St. Térèse Kilisesi) is a Catholic Church in Ankara the capital of Turkey. History After the 1917 Great Ankara Fire, it was used as the French Embassy until the move to the new service building from 1928 until 1980. Turks and Armenians lived around the church during the Ottoman Empire. Ankara St. Clement's University is north of the church. The church building was registered as a first degree urban site on April 12, 1980. Ulus, Ankara
Ulus is a quarter in Ankara, Turkey and is located at the center of the capital city. It was once the heart of old Ankara. The name means "tribe, nation" in Turkish. It is now a predominantly a commercial and tourist area made up of banks, malls, shops, hotels, businesses, restaurants, and many historical sites. The first Turkish Grand National Assembly convened here in 1923 in the parliament building at Ulus Square ( tr, Ulus Meydanı), which still stands in original. Across from the historical parliament building is the city's oldest hotel, the Ankara Palas, where Atatürk had stayed. Ankara Citadel, another historical attraction, is located immediate east of Ulus . In the center of Ulus Square, there is a memorial called Monument of Republic, which was erected in 1927 as a symbol of the Turkish War of Independence. 1917 Great Ankara Fire
The 1917 Great Ankara Fire caused extensive damage to the Turkish city of Ankara on September 15, 1917. The areas affected included the Hisarönü, ''Çıkrıkçılar Yokuşu'', ''Bedesten'', Saraçlar Bazaar and ''Atpazarı''. It is estimated that up to 1,900 people lost their lives in the fire. The 1917 fire was part of successive fires which occurred in 20 provinces of Turkey in the span of three years. After the fire, only two mosques and seven churches remained in Ankara. Christianity in Turkey has a long history dating back to the early origins of Christianity in Asia Minor during the 1st century AD. In modern times the percentage of Christians in Turkey has declined from 20 to 25 percent in 1914 to 3–5.5 percent in 1927, to 0.3–0.4%, roughly translating to 200,000–320,000 devotees. The percentage of Christians in Turkey fell was mainly as a result of the Late Ottoman genocides (Armenian genocide, Greek genocide and the Assyrian genocide), the population exchange between Greece and Turkey, the emigration of Christians that began in the late 19th century and gained pace in the first quarter of the 20th century, and due to events such as Varlık Vergisi and the 1955 Istanbul pogrom against Christian Greeks and Armenians.
