St. Thomas Cathedral, Pala
St Thomas Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Pala, is a Catholic church that follows the Syro-Malabar rite and is located in the town of Pala, Kerala, Pala in the state of Kerala in the south of the Asian country of India. It serves as the mother church of the Syro-Malabar Eparchy of Palai, Syro-Malabar Diocese or Eparchy of Palai ('' Eparchia Palaiensis'') which was created in 1950 through the bull "Quo Ecclesiarum" of Pope Pius XII. The church was founded in the year 1002 July 3, by four Syrian Christian families. These four Christian families of Palai were Tharayil, Koottumkal (brother of Tharayil_family_of_Pala, Tharayil Mappila), Erakonni and Vayalakombil. They engaged mainly in agriculture and trade. Syro-Malabar Eparchy Of Palai
The Eparchy of Palai is a Syro-Malabar Catholic ecclesiastical territory or eparchy of the Catholic Church with an area of 1166 km2 comprising the Meenachil taluk and a few villages of the neighbouring taluks in Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Idukki districts of central Kerala in South India. The faithful of this eparchy, numbering 326,742, belong to the ancient St. Thomas Christian community. The seat of the bishop is the St. Thomas Cathedral based in the town of Palai. The current bishop is Mar Joseph Kallarangatt, serving since March 2004. Mar Jacob Muricken has been auxiliary bishop since 2012. Pope Pius XII established the eparchy bifurcating then Eparchy of Changanacherry, and out of the territory covered by the then foranes of Palai, Muttuchira, Kuravilangad, Anakkallu and Ramapuram on 25 July 1950. Palai
Pallai ( ta, பளை, si, පල්ලෙයි), also spelt Palai, is a small town in the Kilinochchi District, Northern Province, Sri Lanka. It is located near the coast on the northern peninsula, approximately south-east of Jaffna. In 1861 the Church Mission Society sent Rev. John Backus to Pallai to establish a Christian community in the town. This led to the construction and dedication of St. Andrew's Church on 30 November 1895. In 1921 the government declared a area adjacent to the town as a forest reserve. Transport Pallai is located on the (A9) Kandy-Jaffna Highway. It is served by a railway station on the national network which was out of use due to war damage. In 2009, agreements were made to restore the line back into service.
