St. Regis Falls is a census-designated place (CDP) in Waverly, Franklin County, New York, United States. The population of the CDP was 464 at the 2010 census. Geography St. Regis Falls is located at the northern end of the town of Waverly, along the north side of the St. Regis River, a tributary of the St. Lawrence River. The falls for which the community is named are on the river at the western end of town. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of , all land. New York State Route 458 passes through the community, leading west to Nicholville and southeast to Santa Clara. Potsdam is to the west via Routes 458 and 11B, while Paul Smiths is to the southeast via Routes 458 and 30. The northern border of the CDP follows the Waverly/ Dickinson town line. Dickinson, Franklin County, New York
Dickinson is a town in Franklin County, New York, United States. The population was 823 at the 2010 census. The town was named after Philemon Dickinson, a brigadier general of the New Jersey militia during the American Revolutionary War. Dickinson is on the western border of Franklin County, southwest of Malone and east of Potsdam. History The name originally proposed for the area was "Annastown", after the daughter of a local landowner; but another influential landowner, Jonathan Dayton, prevailed in naming the town after his friend and fellow member of congress Philemon Dickinson. The town of Dickinson was formed from the town of Malone in 1809. In 1812, part of Dickinson was used to form the town of Bangor. New York State Route 30 (NY 30) is a state highway in the central part of New York in the United States. It extends for from an interchange with NY 17 (Future Interstate 86) in the Southern Tier to the US–Canada border in the state's North Country, where it continues into Quebec as Route 138. On a regional level, the route serves to connect the Catskill Park to the Adirondack Park. In the latter, NY 30 is known as the Adirondack Trail. Paul Smiths is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Brighton in Franklin County, New York, United States. It is located on Lower Saint Regis Lake in the Adirondacks, northwest of Saranac Lake, located at 44°26' North 74°15' West. The population of the CDP was 671 at the 2010 census. History The hamlet was named after the Paul Smith's Hotel (formally known as the Saint Regis House), founded in 1859 by Apollos "Paul" Smith as one of the first wilderness resorts in the Adirondacks. Paul Smith's College was built on the site of the hotel after the hotel burned down in 1930. It was funded by the estate of Smith's son Phelps, who died in 1937. New York State Route 11B
New York State Route 11B (NY 11B) is a state highway in northern New York in the United States. It provides a parallel, more southerly east–west route to U.S. Route 11 between US 11 in Potsdam and US 11, NY 30, and NY 37 in Malone. NY 11B serves both the Potsdam Municipal Airport and the riverside hamlet of Nicholville, where NY 11B meets NY 458. Aside from the two villages at each end of the route and the hamlet of Nicholville near the midpoint, NY 11B passes through rural, lightly populated areas, as does its parent to the north. In Malone, NY 11B overlaps NY 30 for one block in order to reconnect to US 11. Potsdam is a village located in the Town of Potsdam in St. Lawrence County, New York, United States. The population was 8,312 at the 2020 census. Santa Clara is a town in Franklin County, New York, United States. The population was 345 at the 2010 census. The name was derived from the wife of an early town businessman, John Hurd. The town is in the southwestern part of the county, southwest of the village of Malone and west of the village of Saranac Lake. The town is within the Adirondack Park. It includes the 58 ponds of the Saint Regis Canoe Area, presently the only Canoe Wilderness Area in the park, as well as most of Upper Saranac Lake. Lawrence is a town in St. Lawrence County, New York, United States. The population was 1,715 at the 2020 census. The town is named after William Lawrence, an early land owner. The Town of Lawrence is on the eastern border of the county and is east of Potsdam. History Settlers began arriving in the region shortly after 1800, but many left permanently during the War of 1812. New York State Route 458 (NY 458) is a state highway in the North Country of New York in the United States. It extends for from an intersection with NY 11B in the St. Lawrence County town of Hopkinton to a junction with NY 30 in the Franklin County town of Brighton. The route follows a generally northwest–southeast alignment between the two points, serving only small hamlets as it crosses an otherwise rural area of the North Country.
