St. Luke's Hospital, Nazareth
St. Luke's Hospital is a private, Christian, minority-run hospital in Nazareth, Tamil Nadu, India. It is administered by the C.S.I. Thoothukudi–Nazareth Diocese. History The hospital was established in 1870 by the first qualified doctor of Christian Mission in India, Rev. Dr. J. M. Strachan MD. of Edinburgh, Scotland, a S.P.G. missionary dedicated to serving the poor and needy. Dr. Strachan worked in various parts of South India before opening the full-time regular medical mission at Nazareth. Later on, Strachan was appointed as the Secretary of the Madras Diocesan Committee of S.P.G. (1874-1879) and then as Bishop of Rangoon in the year 1882. The hospital's administration was assumed by doctor and surgeon Rev. Nazareth is a town in the Thoothukudi district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Geography Nazareth is situated near the southern tip of the country. It was named by early Christian missionaries in memory of the city of Nazareth Israel, where Jesus Christ spent his early days. John Miller Strachan (1832–1906) was the second Bishop of Rangoon. He was born in Barnsley and educated at King's College London. He was ordained in 1861 and was a SPG in India until his episcopal appointment. He was consecrated on 1 May 1882. and served until 1902 when he resigned his see. Benjamin Henry Arthur Margoschis (24 December 1852 – 27 April 1908) was a Protestant Christian missionary in India. He served the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (SPG) as an overseas missionary in India. The Medical Council of India (MCI) was a statutory body for establishing uniform and high standards of medical education in India until its dissolution on 25 September 2020 when it was replaced by National Medical Commission.
