St. Leon Wind Farm
St. Leon Wind Farm (french: Parc éolien de Saint-Léon) is Manitoba's first wind farm, in St. Leon, Manitoba, Canada. In the first phase completed in 2006, 63 wind turbines were erected over a area, capable of delivering 99 megawatts (MW). In 2011 a further 10 turbines were purchased, expanding the capacity of the project to 120 megawatts. Wind turbines Each turbine has three blades made with carbon fiber and balsa wood. Each blade is long. The nacelle containing the gearbox and generator is mounted on a tubular steel tower. The assembly of blades, hub, gearbox, and generator, in total weighs around 220 tonnes. The Wind Power Production Incentive, or WPPI, was a program of the Canadian Government that promoted the generation of electricity from wind power in Canada to reduce the amount of greenhouse gas that would otherwise enter the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels. During the five-year field trial projects were performed to test the performance based on various weather conditions. Provision of economic incentives was guaranteed for up to 1,000 MW of newly installed capacity by 2007. Pembina Escarpment
The Pembina Escarpment is a scarp that runs from South Dakota to Manitoba, and forms the western wall of the Red River Valley. The height of the escarpment above the river valley is . Geology The escarpment was originally formed by the undercutting of Cretaceous sandstones (the Dakota Formation) by the ancestral Red River. The escarpment was later steepened by glacial scouring. The escarpment is preserved due to a layer of erosion-resistant shale (the Pierre Formation) on top of the sandstone. The vista today, of wooded hills with small farms tucked into valleys (such as the Pembina Valley), is reminiscent of pastoral sections of New England.
