St. Lawrence Church, Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni
The St. Lawrence Church (french: Église Saint-Laurent de Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni) is a religious building that serves as a parish church dependent on the Diocese of Cayenne (''Dioecesis Caiennensis'' or ''Diocèse de Cayenne'') which was created by pope Pius XII with the Bull ''"Qua sollicitudine"'' in 1956. The temple follows the Roman or Latin rite, is located in the town of Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, French Guiana. The church is listed as a historic monument by a legal provision of 16 August 1995. It originated in the first chapel dedicated to St. Lawrence opened in 1958. The present church was renovated and reopened in 2006. Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni
Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni (; gcr, Senloran di Maronni) is a commune of French Guiana, an overseas region and department of France located in South America. Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni is one of the three sub-prefectures of French Guiana and the seat of the Arrondissement of Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni. It is the second most populous city of French Guiana, with 47,621 inhabitants at the January 2019 census. History Founded in 1858 by Auguste Baudin, it was formerly the arrival point for prisoners, who arrived at the ''Camp de la Transportation''. The town was near an Amerindian settlement called Kamalakuli named after their chief. On 15 September 1880, the town became the capital city of a special prison commune; the mayor was the Director of the Penitentiary Administration. When Gaston Monnerville was elected Deputy in 1932, he tried to close the prison complex. On 17 June 1938, the prison was repealed, but the final closure did not come until 1946. The Catholic Church in French Guiana is part of the worldwide Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the Pope in Rome. Around 75% of the population is Catholic and the dependency forms a single diocese - the Diocese of Cayenne. Erected as the apostolic prefecture of French Guiana-Cayenne in 1651, it remained a prefecture until elevated to a Vicariate in January 1933, and finally to the Diocese of Cayenne in February 1956. The Diocese is currently a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Fort-de-France et Saint-Pierre on the island of Martinique. The current bishop is Emmanuel Marie Philippe Louis Lafont, appointed in June 2004. That was actually the former bishop but the Wikipedia editors have not updated it. The new bishop is Louis Sankalé.
