St. Lawrence's Church, Wellawatte
St. Lawrence's Church is the seat of the Wellawatte parish of Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Colombo. It is located at Galle Road (near Pereira Lane), Wellawatte, Colombo 06. The church is dedicated to St. Lawrence, the patron saint of Sri Lanka, Colombo and parish of Wellawatte. On 6 January 1938 the Archbishop of Colombo, Jean-Marie Masson inaugurated the new Parish of Wellawatte. The original St Lawrence’s Church was built at Villa Pleasant (which was renamed St Lawrence Road) and Rev. Robert Fernando was appointed as its first priest. Fernando realised that the Church was too small for the congregation and purchased a parcel of land at 375 Galle Road, Wellawatte. On 17 January 1954 the Archbishop of Colombo, Thomas Cooray laid the foundation stone for the new church. Wellawatte
Wellawatta is a neighbourhood of Colombo, Sri Lanka. It lies immediately south of Bambalapitiya and is classified as zone 6 within the Colombo Municipal region. The town begins at the old Dutch canal just before the Savoy Cinema and extends south to the same canal that reaches the sea just before the junction at Hospital Road where Dehiwela begins. It is bounded on the west by the waters of the Indian Ocean and extends to Pamankada where Havelock Road forks and meets the Sri Saranankara Road bridge, which stretches over the Dutch canal, extending towards Kohuwala-Hospital Road junction on Dutugemunu Street. The name ''Wellawatta'' means 'Sandy Garden' in Sinhalese and 'White Garden' in Tamil. The ''Daily News'' is an English-language newspaper in Sri Lanka. It is now published by the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (Lake House), a government-owned corporation. The newspaper commenced publishing on 3 January 1918. D. R. Wijewardena was its founder. The present-day newspaper is written as a broadsheet, with photographs printed both in color and black and white. Weekday printings include the main section, containing news on national affairs, international affairs, business, political analysis, sports, editorials and opinions. In the Catholic Church, a parish ( la, parochia) is a stable community of the faithful within a particular church, whose pastoral care has been entrusted to a parish priest (Latin: ''parochus''), under the authority of the diocesan bishop. A2 Highway (Sri Lanka)
The A 2 is an A-Grade road in Sri Lanka. It connects Colombo and Wellawaya via Kalutara, Galle, Matara and Hambantota. Route Colombo to Galle The west-coast portion of the highway consists of the Galle Road. Within Colombo, the A2 serves as a north–south backbone to the city. It is split into two one-way streets from Colombo Fort to Wellawatte, in order to ease traffic flow. Thomas Cooray
Thomas Benjamin Cooray (Sinhala language: තෝමස් බෙන්ජමින් කුරේ), O.M.I. (28 December 1901 – 29 October 1988) was a Sri Lankan cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church who served as the Archbishop of Colombo from 1947 to 1976, and was elevated to the cardinalate in 1965 by Pope Paul VI. His cause of canonization commenced in 2010 and he has been bestowed with the title of Servant of God.
