St. Julien's, Newfoundland And Labrador
St. Julien's, also known as Grandois and Grandois-St. Julien's, is a small fishing community on the eastern shores of the Great Northern Peninsula on the island of Newfoundland in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The community is accessible via an unpaved road, Route 438, which branches off of Route 432 near the community of Main Brook. Near the community is an abandoned copper mine which has been recently re-discovered with potential new mining quantities. During King George's War, the village was attacked in the Newfoundland Campaign (1744). St. Julien Island appears on the earliest maps of Newfoundland. The French fished in the area as early as the 1500s. The Great Northern Peninsula (Inuttitut: ''Ikkarumiklua'') is the largest and longest peninsula of Newfoundland, Canada, approximately 270 km long and 90 km wide at its widest point and encompassing an area of 17,483 km2. It is defined as that part of Newfoundland from Bonne Bay northwards around Cape Norman and Cape Bauld and thence southwards to the head of White Bay, bounded by the Gulf of St. Lawrence on the west, the Strait of Belle Isle on the north and the Labrador Sea and White Bay on the east. Newfoundland Campaign (1744)
The Newfoundland Campaign was conducted by the British against the seven French ports and fishing fleet off northern Newfoundland at the opening of King George's War. The British were led by Captain Robert Young of and Captain John Rous of ''Young Eagle'' (16 carriage, 24 swivel guns, 100 men). Historical Context French colonolists and their recruited militias had attacked British villages in Newfoundland in the fall of 1727. Campaign In June 1744, Rous captured five prizes off Newfoundland and returned them to St. John's on June 29. In the first 12 days of July, Rous caught 9 more prizes on the Grand Banks. By the end of July, Rous arrived in port at Ferryland with seven more ships. Rous then arrived in St. John's again with another 12 prizes. ''The Telegram'' is a daily newspaper published weekdays and Saturdays (as ''The Weekend Telegram'') in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. History ''The Evening Telegram'' was first published on April 3, 1879 by William James Herder. It adopted its current name in 1998, although it was also briefly published under this name in 1881. Herder and his descendants owned and published ''The Evening Telegram'' until it was sold to Thomson Newspapers (now Thomson Corporation) in 1970, and continued as publishers until the departure of Stephen R. Herder (William's Grandson) in 1991. William Herder began as a printer for the St. John's weekly ''The Courier''. Area code 709 is the telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the entire Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. History The first telephone system was installed in Newfoundland in 1885, but domestic long-distance calls within the Dominion of Newfoundland could be placed on a limited basis only in 1921. The first long-distance call from Newfoundland to Canada was made on January 10, 1939, by using a shortwave radio link operated by the Canadian Marconi Company in Montréal. Shortwave radio also carried calls from St. John's to London, England.
