St. Joseph's College, Trincomalee
St. Joseph's College (SJC) is a national school in Trincomalee, Eastern Province, Sri Lanka. History The school was founded on 27 July 1867 by Rev. Fr. Louis Mary Keating. On 1 April 1931 the Roman Catholic Diocese of Trincomalee-Batticaloa handed the school over to the Society of Jesus of the Province of Louisiana. Most private schools in Ceylon were taken over by the government in 1960 but SJC chose to remain as a private and non-fee levying school. The school struggled financially thereafter and ten years later the school was handed over to the government. Trincomalee
Trincomalee (; ta, திருகோணமலை, translit=Tirukōṇamalai; si, ත්රිකුණාමළය, translit= Trikuṇāmaḷaya), also known as Gokanna and Gokarna, is the administrative headquarters of the Trincomalee District and major resort port city of Eastern Province, Sri Lanka. The Eastern Province ( ta, கிழக்கு மாகாணம் ''Kiḻakku Mākāṇam''; si, නැගෙනහිර පළාත ''Næ̆gĕnahira Paḷāta'') is one of the nine provinces of Sri Lanka, the first level administrative division of the country. A National school ( si, ජාතික පාසල, Jathika Pasala, ta, தேசியப் பாடசாலை) in Sri Lanka is a school that is funded and administered by the Ministry of Education of the central government as opposed to Provincial schools run by the local provincial council. These schools provide secondary education (some including collegiate), with some providing primary education as well. Joseph Ponniah
Right Reverend Joseph Ponniah (born 12 October 1952) is a Sri Lankan Tamil people, Sri Lanka Tamil priest and the current Roman Catholicism in Sri Lanka, Roman Catholic Bishop of Batticaloa. Early life Ponniah was born on 12 October 1952 in Thannamunai in eastern Dominion of Ceylon, Ceylon. He was educated at St. Joseph's Minor Seminary and St. Joseph's College, Trincomalee. He has Bachelor of Philosophy degree from St. Paul Seminary, Thiruchirapally and a Bachelor of Theology from the National Seminary, Poonah.
