St. Catherine's School For Girls
St. Catherine's School is an independent Episcopal diocesan school in Richmond, Virginia, USA. It is the oldest private, all-girls school in Richmond and the only independent all-girls school in Virginia for age 3 to grade 12. St. Catherine's is the sister school to St. Christopher's. The school was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register in 2008. History St. Catherine's was founded in 1890 by Virginia Randolph Ellett during the middle of Richmond's New South movement. In 1917, the school was incorporated and moved to its present site in the Westhampton area of Richmond. It was sold to the Episcopal Church in 1920 and renamed for St. Catherine, the patron saint of young women, especially those undergoing education. Virginia Landmarks Register
The Virginia Landmarks Register (VLR) is a list of historic properties in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The state's official list of important historic sites, it was created in 1966. The Register serves the same purpose as the National Register of Historic Places. The nomination form for any Virginia site listed on the VLR is sent forward to the National Park Service for consideration for listing on the National Register. Nancy Witcher Langhorne Astor, Viscountess Astor, (19 May 1879 – 2 May 1964) was an American-born British politician who was the first woman seated as a Member of Parliament (MP), serving from 1919 to 1945. Early life Clark was born in 1882 in Montgomery, Alabama to Robert Clark, a railroad worker originally from Belfast, and Estelle Goodman Clark, a Jewish music teacher originally from New Orleans. Bal Du Bois
The Bal du Bois is an annual debutante ball held at the Country Club of Virginia in Richmond. The ball serves as a fundraiser for the Junior Board of Sheltering Arms Physical Rehabilitation Hospital. Participants are referred to as sponsors and any young woman, who is a rising senior in college, is eligible to participate. Sponsors are solicited from all Richmond area high school graduating classes. Since its founding in 1957, the ball has raised over $3.8 million for Sheltering Arms.
