St. Catharines Stompers
The St. Catharines Blue Jays were a minor league baseball team which played at Community Park in St. Catharines, Ontario. They were the Short-Season A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays in the New York–Penn League. History The team began play in 1986 as the Blue Jays, though were later renamed the St. Catharines Stompers in 1995. The team left St. Catharines after the 1999 season to become the Queens Kings in 2000. On 4 July 2007, it was reported in the St. Catharines Standard the Stompers were going to return in the summer of 2008. Former team owner, Terrence O'Malley was quoted as saying: "the Stompers are back ... We'll be playing at Community Park beginning next summer." This article prompted a number of responses, though, in the end this turned out to be only a satirical piece. The Blue Jays won the New York-Penn league title in 1986. New York–Penn League
The New York–Penn League (NYPL) was a Minor League Baseball league that operated in the northeastern United States from 1939 to 2020. Classified as a Class A Short Season league, its season started in June, after major-league teams signed their amateur draft picks to professional contracts, and ended in early September. In 2019, its last season of operation, the NYPL had 14 teams from eight different states. In addition to New York and Pennsylvania, from which the league drew its name, the NYPL also had clubs in Maryland, Massachusetts, Ohio, Vermont, West Virginia, and Connecticut. The Brooklyn Cyclones were the last NYPL champions, defeating the Lowell Spinners, two games to one, in 2019. The Oneonta Yankees/Tigers won 12 championships, the most among all teams in the league, followed by the Auburn Mets/Twins/Phillies/Doubledays (8) and Jamestown Falcons/Expos (7). Bob Shirley
Robert Charles Shirley (born June 25, 1954) is a former professional baseball pitcher. He played all or parts of 11 seasons in Major League Baseball, from 1977 to 1987, for the San Diego Padres, St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds, New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals. Shirley was a southpaw pitcher who worked both as a starter and in relief. Amateur career Shirley was originally drafted out of Putnam City High School in 1972 by the Los Angeles Dodgers, but chose to attend the University of Oklahoma. While there, he was a member of the gold medal-winning Team USA at the 1974 Amateur World Series, the predecessor to today's Baseball World Cup. Duane Larson
Duane Carl Larson (born December 6, 1948 at Jacksonville, Florida) is an American former minor league baseball infielder and manager and is currently a Major League scout and special assistant to the General Manager in the Atlanta Braves organization. Larson came to the Braves organization in 2003 from the Toronto Blue Jays, where he worked in scouting and player development for 26 years. Larson joined the Blue Jays organization in 1977, working as a minor league scout and manager of Utica in the New York–Penn League. The former infielder played in the Padres farm system from 1972 to 1976, and began coaching as a player/coach with Reno of the California League during the 1975-76 seasons. Rocket Wheeler
Ralph Norman "Rocket" Wheeler (born January 11, 1955, at Houston, Texas) is a former minor league infielder and the current minor league manager for the Class A Short Season Auburn Doubledays. Wheeler attended the University of Houston where he obtained his nickname "Rocket" for his speed and hustle. Wheeler was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in 1977. He played in the Blue Jays farm system until 1982, including stints with the Florence Blue Jays and the Kinston Eagles. He was honored by the Kinston Indians by being inducted into the Kinston Professional Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006. He stayed with the Blue Jays system when he began his managerial career in 1985.
