St. Andrew's Church (LeRoy, Wisconsin)
St. Andrew's Church is a historic Roman Catholic church in LeRoy, Wisconsin, United States. The Gothic Revival church was designed by architect Anton Dohmen and built 1899–1901, largely by parishioners. The Emil Frei Stained Glass Company later added over 20 stained glass windows to the church; these windows were described as "works of art with vivid colors and intricate details" by the Wisconsin Historical Society. The church's congregation was composed of German farmers from the surrounding area, who paid for the church and constructed parts of its interior; the church has historically served as a focal point for community life. The church has been called the "Cathedral on the Marsh" due to its proximity to the Horicon Marsh. LeRoy is a town in Dodge County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,116 at the 2000 census. The unincorporated communities of Farmersville and LeRoy are located in the town. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 37.4 square miles (96.8 km2), of which, 36.6 square miles (94.7 km2) of it is land and 0.8 square miles (2.1 km2) of it (2.22%) is water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 1,116 people, 389 households, and 317 families living in the town. The population density was 30.5 people per square mile (11.8/km2). There were 396 housing units at an average density of 10.8 per square mile (4.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 99.10% White, 0.36% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.09% from other races. Horicon Marsh
Horicon Marsh is a marsh located in northern Dodge and southern Fond du Lac counties of Wisconsin. It is the site of both a national and a state wildlife refuge. The silted-up glacial lake is the largest freshwater cattail marsh in the United States. Geological history Horicon Marsh was created by the Green Bay lobe of the Wisconsin glaciation during the Pleistocene era. The glacier, during its advance, created many drumlins (a glacial landform) in the region, many of which have become the islands of Horicon Marsh. The marsh and surrounding Dodge County have the highest concentration of drumlins in the world. During the glacier's retreat, a moraine was created, forming a natural dam holding back the waters from the melting glacier and forming Glacial Lake Horicon. The Rock River slowly eroded the moraine, and the lake drained. As the levels of silt, clay and peat accumulated in the former lake's basin, the Horicon Marsh was formed.
