Srimanta Sankaradeva Sangha
The Srimanta Sankaradeva Sangha, established in 1930, is the largest socio-religious organization in Assam. History The beginning of the twentieth century saw the onset of different types of movements in Assam. It was a movement of the search for truth, where some revolutionary intellectuals took the lead. These people participated in the freedom movement led by Mahatma Gandhi. In the true Gandhian spirit they initiated a reform movement in this region. They tried to remove superstitions prevalent in society. They realized that the message of Sankardev and Madhavdev, two medieval saints, was the only path to redeem the society from the domination of high caste people as well regressive practices. Though Srimanta Sankaradeva (1449-1568 AD) had preached an egalitarian ideology in the fifteenth century itself, some people with vested interests had infiltrated into the Satra institution and entrenched themselves as sole custodians of the order. Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva Viswavidyalaya is a university established through ''The Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva Viswavidyalaya Act, 2013'' in the State of Assam, India in 2013. The university is located in Nagaon and is named after him. History Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva (1449-1568) worked in diverse fields like religion, literature, music, dance, drama, architecture, and social reconstruction. He translated most of the Bhâgavata Mahapurana into the Assamese language and was the first playwright in any Indian language other than Sanskrit. He wrote more than twenty six scriptures mostly in the Assamese language besides the Brajawali form and one in Sanskrit. He composed lyrics/songs including the Borgeets. Dimbeswar Neog
Dimbeswar Neog (1899–1966), also known as the Indradhenu Poet, was a renowned writer, literati, critic, educator and poet of Assamese literature. Early life Born in the little riverine village of Kamarfadia in Sibsagar, Assam, Dimbeswar Neog was the eldest child to Manik Chandra Neog and Chandra Prabha. His early education began at Kamarfadia. After his matriculation, he joined Cotton College in Guwahati. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1924 after which he pursued Masters in English study. Most of the literary works of Neog were done during the period while, studying at Cotton College. Neog was selected to be the General Secretary of Assam Chatra Sanmelan and remained associated with it from 1921 to 1924. Nagaon (previously Nowgong; Assamese নগাঁও), is a town and a municipal board in Nagaon district in the Indian state of Assam. It is situated east of Guwahati. Kamrup Rural district, or simply Kamrup district (Pron: ˈkæmˌrəp or ˈkæmˌru:p), is an administrative district in the state of Assam in India formed by dividing the old Kamrup district into two in the year 2003; other being Kamrup Metropolitan district, named after the region it constitutes. This district, along with Nalbari, Barpeta, Kamrup Metropolitan, Bajali and Baksa districts has been created from the Undivided Kamrup district.
