Squint Phares
John Lee "Squint" Phares (December 31, 1915 – August 16, 1974) was an American professional basketball player. He played college basketball, baseball, and football for West Virginia University. Phares then played in the National Basketball League for the Pittsburgh Pirates during the 1938–39 season and averaged 6.9 points per game. Elkins is a city in and the county seat of Randolph County, West Virginia, United States. The community was incorporated in 1890 and named in honor of Stephen Benton Elkins, a U.S. Senator from West Virginia. The population was 6,950 at the 2020 census and estimated at 6,895 in 2021. Elkins is home to Davis and Elkins College and to the Mountain State Forest Festival, held in early October every year.
