Squaw Humper Dam
Squaw Humper Dam is a dam on Tahc'a Okute Wakpa (formerly Squaw-Humper Creek) in Oglala Lakota County, South Dakota, in the United States. It is located within Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, the lands of the Oglala Lakota Nation. The name has generated a degree of controversy for containing the term squaw The English word ''squaw'' is an ethnic and sexual slur, historically used for Indigenous North American women. While the Oglala Lakota successfully changed the name of the stream in federal usage, a proposal to rename the dam to ''Tahc'a Okute Mni Onaktake'' did not succeed. Tahc'a Okute Wakpa
Tahc'a Okute Wakpa is a stream in Oglala Lakota County, South Dakota, in the United States. In the Lakota language, ''tahc'a okute'' means "deer-hunting grounds" and ''wakpa'' means a stream or river. The stream was previously known as Squaw-Humper Creek, reputedly named for a local white man who had a live-in Native American girlfriend ( squaw). The term "squaw-humper" was cited as "contemptuous" as early as 1940, and was removed from federal usage by a decision of the Board on Geographic Names in 2015. Oglala Lakota County (known as Shannon County until May 2015) is a county in southwestern South Dakota, United States. The population was 13,672 at the 2020 census. Oglala Lakota County does not have a functioning county seat; Hot Springs in neighboring Fall River County serves as its administrative center. The county was created as a part of the Dakota Territory in 1875, although it remains unorganized. Its largest community is Pine Ridge. The county lies entirely within the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and contains part of Badlands National Park. It is one of five South Dakota counties entirely on an Indian reservation. The county is named after the Oglala Lakota, a band of the Lakota people. Many of the county's inhabitants are members of this sub-tribe. Pine Ridge Indian Reservation
The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation ( lkt, Wazí Aháŋhaŋ Oyáŋke), also called Pine Ridge Agency, is an Oglala Lakota Indian reservation located entirely within the U.S. state of South Dakota. Originally included within the territory of the Great Sioux Reservation, Pine Ridge was created by the Act of March 2, 1889, 25 Stat. 888. in the southwest corner of South Dakota on the Nebraska border. Today it consists of of land area and is one of the largest reservations in the United States. The reservation encompasses the entirety of Oglala Lakota County and Bennett County, the southern half of Jackson County, and a small section of Sheridan County added by Executive Order No. 2980 of February 20, 1904. The Oglala (pronounced , meaning "to scatter one's own" in Lakota language) are one of the seven subtribes of the Lakota people who, along with the Dakota people, Dakota, make up the Sioux, Očhéthi Šakówiŋ (Seven Council Fires). A majority of the Oglala live on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, the eighth-largest Indian reservation, Native American reservation in the United States.
