Square Angel
Square Angel (foaled April 4, 1970 in Ontario) was a Canadian Champion Thoroughbred racehorse. Background Bred by E. P. Taylor, Square Angel was sired by 1964 Belmont Stakes winner Quadrangle. Her dam was Nangela, a daughter of Nearctic, the sire of one of the most influential sires in Thoroughbred history, Northern Dancer. Racing career Square Angel was purchased and raced by General W. Preston Gilbride CBE, DSO, CO-N, who entrusted her race conditioning to future Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame trainer Frank Merrill, Jr. A stakes winner at two, as a three-year-old in 1973, Square Angel won Canada's most important race for fillies of her age group: the Canadian Oaks. In addition to a win in the Fury Stakes and Nettie Handicap she finished first in the Wonder Where Stakes but was disqualified and set back to second. Quadrangle (horse)
Quadrangle (April 16, 1961 – September 28, 1978) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 1964 Belmont Stakes. Background Bred by Paul Mellon, Quadrangle was foaled at the Rokeby Farm near Upperville, Virginia. He was out of the mare Tap Day, a daughter of the Calumet Farm champion stallion Bull Lea. His sire was the multiple American stakes winner Cohoes, a son of Mahmoud, the Aga Khan's 1936 Epsom Derby winner. Quadrangle was trained by future Hall of Fame trainer Elliott Burch, Racing career Quadrangle is best known for spoiling Northern Dancer's bid to capture the 1964 U.S. Triple Crown when he won the Belmont Stakes, which was run that year at Aqueduct Racetrack. Fantastic Light (foaled February 13, 1996) is a retired Thoroughbred racehorse and pensioned sire. He was foaled in the United States but was trained in England and Dubai during his racing career, which ran from August 1998 to his retirement following the Breeders' Cup Turf in October 2001. He raced in seven countries, winning Group One/Grade I races in five of them and was a dual winner of the Emirates World Series Racing Championship. He was named United States Champion Male Turf Horse, European Horse of the Year and European Champion Older Horse in 2001. He was also well known for his two races against the 2001 Epsom Derby winner Galileo. In August 2012 it was announced that he had been pensioned from stallion duty while in Japan and would return to Dalham Hall in England to live out his days as a pensioner. Swain (12 February 1992 - 27 July 2022) was an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He is one of only three horses to win two editions of Britain's premier weight-for-age race, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Background Swain was a bay horse with a white star and snip and white socks on his hind legs bred in Ireland by his owner Sheikh Mohammed. He was one of the best horses sired by Nashwan, the 1989 Epsom Derby winner. Swain's dam, Love Smitten was a successful Canadian-bred racemare whose wins included the Grade I Apple Blossom Handicap. The colt was originally sent into training in France with André Fabre. The Santa Maria Stakes is an American Grade II Thoroughbred horse race run annually in late May at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. A race for fillies and mares age four and older, it is contested on Pro-Ride synthetic dirt over a distance of one and one-sixteenth miles (8.5 furlongs). The Apple Blossom Handicap is a Grade I American Thoroughbred horse race for fillies and mares that are four years old or older, run under handicap conditions over a distance of one and one-sixteenth miles on the dirt track held annually in April at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas. The 2022 running carried a purse of $1,000,000. History The race over the years has become the premier event for distaffers in the Spring, however its beginnings were inconsistent and were far from what we see today. Nonetheless, the inaugural running was on 21 March 1958, as the Apple Blossom Purse, for horses three-years-old or older over the current distance and was won by the three year old colt Count De Blanc in a time of 1:43. Kentucky Broodmare Of The Year
The Kentucky Broodmare of the Year is selected each year by the Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association. The title is considered the highest honor an American thoroughbred broodmare can receive, as the majority of American breeding stock resides in Kentucky. It is a subjective vote, as opposed to the title for leading sire in North America that looks strictly at the earnings of the stallion's progeny in the given year. Currently, a mare is eligible for consideration if one particular offspring, conceived and foaled in Kentucky, won a Grade I stakes race in the award year. Consideration may then also be given to previous foals, specifically the number of stakes winners produced and their earnings. The rules were more relaxed in the past, essentially requiring, as one bloodstock expert observed, only that "the mare be boarded in Kentucky."
